Chapter 1

Nancy Sterling, my adopted sister, had panicked and tripped after getting locked in.Maverick Lovell, my brother—who happened to be the Alpha King—was filled with concern after seeing the injuries on Nancy. He, however, immediately flew into a rage the moment he remembered that I was responsible for the whole thing. "It's been almost four days, yet she still refuses to admit her mistake! She doesn't even bother pretending to regret what she did!"Nancy said, "Please don't hold it against Mira, Maverick. She probably didn't realize I was still in there when she locked the door. She wouldn't have done it if she had known. She must be scared being alone in that sealed chamber. Why don't we just let her out, Maverick? I'm really all right now."Luca Lockwood, my betrothed mate, looked at Nancy affectionately. He found her incredibly naive, which only made him despise me more. "How could it not have been intentional? She pretended not to hear you while you were yelling for help behin

Chapter 2

Nancy was already lying in bed by the time I walked into the room, locking eyes with Luca in pure infatuation. "Do you want to get into bed with me? It's a big bed, so there's still plenty of room on this side, Luca."Luca brushed it off as a joke, offering her a faint, indulgent smile. He wanted to help her fall asleep quickly, so he reached over and gently closed her eyes. "You can rest easy and go to sleep. I won't go anywhere. I'll be right here with you, Nancy."I never knew Luca could actually utter something so sweet. They were clearly made for each other, making my whole existence feel like a total mistake.I was terrified of the dark as well, but Maverick and Luca just brushed it off as me acting dramatic."Do you really still think you're three years old or something? How pathetic can you be, being afraid of the dark?""It's only a little darker than usual. It's not as if you've gone blind, and it certainly won't kill you."I realized then that the only person I could r

Chapter 3

I remembered that one time Nancy had taunted me, asking which of us truly mattered more to Maverick and Luca. I had finally received my answer.Nancy said, "You should go check on Mira. What if something really happened to her? You don't have to worry about me. I'm really fine, Maverick and Luca."She was worried that they wouldn't believe her, so she tried to get up and walk a few steps to show them that she was truly fine.Yet, as soon as she got up, Maverick and Luca held her down on the chair from either side."How is this 'fine'? Your knee injury has almost healed, and now it's bleeding again. Mira's been locked up for days already, so waiting a little longer won't hurt. She can't really escape from the sealed chamber anyway."Nancy said, "You shouldn't hold it against Mira. She's only acting out because she cares deeply about you two."Maverick sighed heavily. "If only Mira were half as sensible as you. I honestly have no idea how she became so jealous and unreasonable."I

Chapter 4

It seemed like the wolfsbane fumes had relentlessly eaten away at my body, even after I died. It left me covered in gray and black patches while the flesh on my face had decomposed until my original features were completely gone.If I hadn't known that I was the only person locked in there, I almost wouldn't have recognized who was lying on the floor either. In the meantime, the two guards hovered over my corpse, looking totally helpless. They didn't need to drag me out. My spirit naturally appeared beside them.Maverick and Luca, who were standing at the doorway, were both startled, their faces turning deathly pale.Maverick took a step forward and caught his toe on the doorframe, nearly tripping. He grabbed the frame to steady himself, gripping it so hard that his knuckles paled. He stared at the corpse on the floor, his eyes widening in disbelief and his lips trembling uncontrollably. "T-That can't be Mira. Where the hell is Mira?"He yelled at the guards in a rage, "Did you gu

Chapter 5

I was carried back to the bed and thoroughly cleaned from head to toe, revealing the injuries that had previously been hidden—now completely exposed and standing out starkly under the lights.A sickening stench of rot permeated the whole room, but Luca and Maverick didn't seem to notice at all. They just stood on either side of the bed, watching in silence. The butler couldn't help but say, "Ms. Lovell should be laid to rest now. Please let her rest in peace, Alpha King Maverick and Alpha Luca."Maverick kept his back to the butler and put a finger to his lips. "Keep it down. Mira isn't dead. She's just sleeping."Luca nodded right along with him. "She's just tired, so let her get some sleep."I smiled bitterly, feeling completely helpless. They had given all their attention to Nancy and barely spared me a kind word when I was still alive. Yet, now that I was dead, they suddenly went crazy and started treating my corpse tenderly. Their belated affection was nothing but pure irony

Chapter 6

Nancy heard everything Luca said in her defense the moment she reached the doorway. She remained composed on the outside, though her eyes were filled with undisguised happiness. She pinched her thigh hard, the sharp pain sending tears streaming down her face. "I feel so awful after seeing Mira's body… I was so overcome with guilt that I couldn't sleep a wink, Maverick and Luca."She sobbed uncontrollably, sniffling between choked breaths as her words came out in fragmented bursts.I couldn't help but roll my eyes at her exaggerated display."If I hadn't been locked in my room, then Mira wouldn't have been poisoned to death by whoever did this. I'm so heartbroken—I feel like I'm the reason she's gone. I'd give up my own life right now if it meant bringing her back," Nancy said as she bolted straight for the window.Maverick caught her in an instant, hoisting her off her feet so she hung uselessly in mid-air. "You're not the one to blame here! Don't eat yourself up with guilt—no on

Chapter 7

Damian hurried over to Maverick and Luca, only to see the unmistakable grief on their faces.Maverick's brow was tightly furrowed as he racked his brain to fix the broken wooden carving. He tried gluing the pieces back together, but even with the two halves held together, the crack between them would still be visible. It mirrored our relationship now, forever split by the chasm between the living and the dead.Luca held the dried grass as carefully as he could, trying to weave it back into a ring from his fragmented memories. Those blades of grass hadn't just been sitting there for a day or two, though—they had been kept for nearly ten years. Thus, the more he handled them, the more they crumbled to pieces in his hands.Damian tentatively called out. "Alpha King Maverick… Luca…"Maverick's expression hardened. He was clearly irritated by Damian's voice as he cut him off mid-sentence. "Didn't I make it clear that no one was to disturb us?"Upon seeing their stern expressions, Dami

Maverick and Luca ultimately came to terms with my death and gave me a proper burial. It was a strikingly clear day as they stood motionless before my tombstone. Luca's face was completely expressionless, though his eyes were clouded with lingering grief. Maverick stood stiff and unyielding without uttering a word, locking away his grief behind that quiet exterior.I stood right in front of them, overwhelmed by a tangle of emotions I couldn't quite put into words. I could tell that underneath their stiff, guarded exteriors lay endless torment, regret, and sorrow."Your apologies mean nothing to me."I thought it to myself, and before I knew it, I had muttered the words out loud. They suddenly widened their eyes as if they had heard me, looking utterly blindsided. They began searching all around, scouring every inch of the graveyard, but came up empty.I hesitated for a moment before continuing, letting out everything I had kept bottled up inside. "I truly loved you both once—just
