Chapter 1

I scrambled to pick up the medication.I swallowed several pills, but they still did nothing.Suddenly, I remembered what my psychiatrist, Reed Powers, had told me."Your body has already developed resistance on the medication. The person you truly rely on for a sense of security is Audrey."My hand trembled as I reached for my phone and tried to call her.All I heard was the mechanical message repeating, "No one is available to take your call."Then I remembered that Damon Walsh didn't like Audrey constantly hovering around me. I tried to calm myself down on my own.But the moment I sat down on the couch, I spotted a pair of CK boxers wedged between the cushions. They weren't mine. The images I didn't want to see kept circling through my mind.My breathing grew more and more difficult. I hurried to open the cabinet for my oxygen tank. But all I found inside were photographs of Damon and Audrey. There were several of them, and in every one, they were kissing. My heart pounde

When I opened my eyes again, I saw my own body curled stiffly inside the closet. So this was what it felt like to be free.My spirit drifted through the house as Audrey helped a drunken Damon inside."Audrey, I really like you..." The coy, drunken murmur made my chest ache.Audrey didn't reject him. She simply eased him onto the couch. "I'll make you some oatmeal."As she passed the mess scattered across the floor, she paused. "Why are there so many pictures of the two of us around the house? We took them together a few days ago. I thought they looked good, so I had them printed.""Looks like Preston was picking a fight again. He even called earlier and yelled at me..." Damon was pretending to be drunk. He rolled over, exposing even more of his bare chest.Audrey simply responded, "Don't bother arguing with a crazy person. I'll take you to get the pictures printed again tomorrow."Then she turned and went into the kitchen, as if I didn't exist in this house at all.I clenched

Audrey helped Damon into the bathroom to take a shower."I didn't bring a change of clothes. Find me something I can wear." Damon said.Steam filled the room, making the intimate atmosphere even more charged. When Audrey came out, she opened our chat."I was a little harsh with you just now, but Damon really is innocent."Come out already. Stop playing hide-and-seek with me. I'm really tired today."There really isn't anything between Damon and me. Stop jumping to conclusions all the time!"She sent a stream of voice messages as she walked toward the bedroom. She knew that whenever I had an episode and lost my temper, I would deliberately hide. Sometimes it took her two hours to find me."I brought your favorite little cake. If you don't come out and eat it, the cream is going to melt."She turned on the bedroom light and instinctively glanced at the bed. Then she sighed. One hand continued holding down the voice-message button while the other reached for the closet door.I

But Audrey pushed Damon away. "Stop saying things like that. I only see you as my little brother!""But I love you!" Damon suddenly became hysterical. "Am I really not even better than a piece of trash like him?""Enough!" Audrey impatiently unplugged the hair dryer and told Damon to leave. "Feelings don't work that way. You don't get to decide how someone else feels."I really do love him. And isn't his condition almost completely under control now? We'll be able to live a normal life together soon."I'll deal with Mom and Dad. I'll be independent soon. I've already bought a house. When the time is right, I'll propose to him."My heart clenched violently.I'd asked her about Damon countless times. Every time, she'd given me vague answers and simply told me to wait.I'd always thought she was only keeping me around for entertainment. Or maybe she was just trying to repay me for saving her life.If she'd told me all this back then… Maybe my condition wouldn't have gotten so seve

For a moment, the entire world seemed to fall silent.Audrey stared at her own hand in disbelief. The cold, rigid sensation of my body seemed to have frightened her.Damon suddenly screamed beside her, "He must have stabbed me and then pretended to pass out because he was afraid he'd be held responsible!"He stepped forward and used his "injured" hand to grab Audrey's arm."Audrey, I'm really scared... But he's your boyfriend. I'll let it go and not call the police for your sake. Just make him get up. It's the middle of the night. We don't need to make such a big deal out of this."Audrey's brows drew together even tighter. She stared at me on the floor, complicated emotions flashing rapidly through her eyes."Preston, stop this. I know you're angry because I spent time with Damon, but hurting him is too much! Get up. We can talk this through. I won't press charges over any of this."My spirit crouched down. I could clearly see my own pale skin, my body deprived of oxygen. My li

Audrey sat there in a daze, as if she hadn't understood what the doctor had said. The nurse gently added, "Ma'am, your boyfriend... has passed away."For a moment, the entire world fell silent. Then Audrey's eyes widened as she stared at me on the floor. "No... No, that's impossible! He's not dead! Save him! You have to save him!"Like a trapped animal suddenly jolted awake, Audrey lunged toward the doctor."He's only twenty-five! He was just... just..." She couldn't finish. She had no idea what I'd gone through after she'd impatiently hung up on me."If an investigation is needed, you'll need to file a police report."Damon, who had been cowering in the corner, suddenly shouted in panic, "No police! Audrey, think about this carefully! Preston died in the closet in your bedroom! What do you think the media will say if this gets out? You'll drag the entire company's stock price down with you!"Audrey slowly turned her head, her bloodshot eyes fixed on Damon. "Damon, are you so a

"Please tell us in detail: when was the last time you saw the deceased, Mr. Preston Hart, today? What condition was he in at the time?"Audrey slowly raised her head. Her lips moved for a long time before she finally managed to produce a dry, broken voice."He... He had an emotional dependency disorder... He couldn't live without me..."Audrey repeated those words over and over. Then she suddenly slammed her fist against her forehead. "It's my fault! It's all my fault! I shouldn't have hung up on him! I shouldn't have left him alone at home!"I looked at Audrey in despair, and an empty ache twisted through my chest.Even after dying, I was still dragging her down. She had an important negotiation for a company project. But now she was trapped here, dealing with this sudden disaster. In the end, I really was the burden that caused her the most trouble.Meanwhile, a female officer was questioning Damon. He looked deeply annoyed."Preston was already mentally unstable. He had tha

When Audrey signed her name on the medical examiner's final report, her fingers were trembling so badly she could barely hold the pen.In black and white, the document coldly declared the end of my life. It also drained away the last of her strength.Audrey insisted on arranging my funeral despite everyone's objections. What caused the biggest uproar was the inscription on my gravestone: "Here Lies Her Beloved Husband, Preston Hart. Erected in Grief by His Wife, Audrey Reynolds."On the day of the funeral, Audrey's parents, David and Margaret Reynolds, finally rushed back from abroad. Her father was livid. "Have you lost your mind? You completely fell out with the Walsh family over a man like this?"Do you know what Damon's father said at the board meeting this morning? Those projects that were practically ours were all snatched up by our competitors!"This whole mess has caused a scandal throughout the city. The company's reputation has suffered, and our partners are all sittin

His eyes were red as he pointed at Audrey."At the end of the day, you just didn't care about him that much! You thought he was a burden. You thought his illness was a burden! You instinctively wanted to escape his dependence on you, which is why I was able to pull you away so easily!"Now that he's dead, you're putting all the blame on me? Audrey, can you be realistic for once?"Yes! I deliberately made him misunderstand things because I hated him! I've known you since we were kids. We're the ones who grew up together! Why should some mentally ill guy who came out of nowhere get you so completely wrapped around his finger?"Damon shouted through his tears, all the resentment and jealousy he'd suppressed for so long finally exploding. "Wasn't he just good at playing the victim? Wasn't he using his illness to keep you tied to him? It's better that he's dead! Now no one can compete with me for you!"Smack!Another sharp slap. But this time, Audrey was stunned after hitting him.D
