Chapter 1 Serena was still on the floor, watching me closely as she scribbled furiously in her notebook.

I tried to cover myself, but Sean stopped me."Eve, Serena's thesis is at a critical stage. If you cover up, all the work she's done so far will go to waste."I was stunned."So that means she gets to watch me naked and use me as her lab rat?"Sean's expression darkened."Don't make it sound so awful. Serena's advisor is really strict, and she's scared she won't graduate on time. That's the only reason she's doing this."Besides, haven't you ever heard of making sacrifices in the name of science?"His twisted logic left me speechless. It took me a while to find my voice."I have rights. If she wants to experiment on me, shouldn't she at least get my consent?"And before this vacation, you promised me this trip would be just the two of us, that you'd never let anyone else butt in!"I pointed at Serena, who was doing her best to look innocent, and asked hoarsely, "So what is she doing here?"Sean knew he was in the wrong and avoided my accusing gaze."This came up suddenly. It's my fault

Chapter 2 Sean didn't answer.

But the worry and urgency in his eyes slowly faded.Thunder cracked again, and I screamed.Sean instinctively moved to hold me, but Serena stopped him."Sean, if you give in to her now, she'll have you under her thumb for the rest of your life, and she'll never get a chance to face her fear."Trust me. I've been studying relationships for almost ten years. I'm a professional!"Sean hesitated and stayed where he was.The rain eased off, and the thunder slowly died away.I lifted my tear-streaked face as my body finally stopped shaking.Serena smiled as if she'd known it all along."See? You're fine."Sean's voice turned cold."You're right. I've spoiled her too much."Serena said that, as part of my exposure therapy, I should be left alone in the room that night.Otherwise, given the chance, I'd go right back to burdening Sean with my feelings. And all the progress we'd just made would go to waste."I happen to have a room with a king-size bed next door. I suppose I can make room for yo

Chapter 3 I itched all over from the allergic reaction and struggled to breathe.

I looked at Sean in disbelief and asked hoarsely, "You're saying I'd risk my own life just to frame Serena?"Sean said nothing. But the look in his eyes told me he'd already decided that was exactly what had happened.I knew nothing I said would make a difference. Despite the dull ache in my chest, I stopped trying to defend myself. Then Serena said she was going to give me some "exposure therapy.""She can't stand seeing us get close, can she? Then let's kiss right in front of her!"She turned and kissed Sean on the lips, shooting me a taunting look."Once she's seen it enough, she'll stop getting jealous over nothing and competing with other women."Sean seemed to buy that too. He lowered his head and kissed her back. The room filled with wet, intimate sounds. My stomach turned.I ran to the bathroom and threw up until I was shaking all over.I looked up at the mirror. My eyes were red, and my face was wet with tears.I didn't understand. How could the man who had always sworn I was

Chapter 4 I took a deep breath and kept climbing the steps on legs that wouldn't stop shaking.

The farther I went, the fewer signs there were. The trail grew wilder and more overgrown, and there wasn't another soul in sight. When I realized I was lost, I stopped where I was.I hunted around for a signal and called Sean.I called 11 times before he finally answered on the 12th try, his voice impatient. "Made it to the top? Take the cable car down yourself. You were taking too long, and we couldn't wait. Serena was craving the shepherd's pie at that little place in town, so I already brought her back."They had actually left me there alone.Dark clouds filled the sky, and it started raining again. The rain pelted me. I was shivering so hard that even my voice shook."But I'm still on the mountain. There aren't any signs out here. I think I'm lost..."I swallowed my pride and begged him, "Sean, could you please come back and get me?""Pfft..."On the other end, I could hear Serena trying not to laugh."She's escalating. Now she's displaying classic histrionic personality traits."T

Chapter 5 Serena clearly hadn't expected this either. For a moment, she froze too.

"Eve, Eve's still on the mountain..."Sean's hands shook with panic as he muttered to himself, "She's in danger. I have to go find her!"He grabbed the car keys off the table and bolted.Serena reacted quickly and grabbed him before he could leave."Sean, wait. Calm down."Her eyes darted around, and she pulled up a photo she'd doctored ahead of time."I didn't want to tell you because I didn't want you and Eve fighting."A college friend of mine was at the park today too. She ran into Eve at the bottom of the mountain and took a picture of her for me... Here, look."In the photo, I was safe and sound.I had a skewer of grilled meat in one hand and a bubble tea in the other.I looked like I was having a great time."My friend said she saw Eve get into a cab. Eve was muttering that her boyfriend wouldn't listen to her, so she was going to disappear on purpose to scare him and teach him a lesson... That way, he'd never dare do it again."The panic in Sean's eyes slowly faded.Serena had

Chapter 6 Sean waited until noon the next day.

He called me more times than he could count, but my phone was still off.The landslide was all over the news.Six people had died, and more than 20 were missing. The park had been closed, and rescue crews were racing to reach survivors.Rescuers carried stretcher after stretcher out of the disaster zone. Medical teams treated the injured and set up triage tents on site.Sean couldn't sit still anymore. He demanded that Serena tell him exactly where her friend had seen me, whether she had anything besides that one photo, and whether she knew where I'd gone.Serena stammered and couldn't answer. As she stumbled over her words and contradicted herself, Sean's head suddenly cleared."Pull up your messages with your friend and show me."Serena hadn't expected him to ask that. She hadn't had time to cover every angle.Guilt flashed in her eyes as she gave a rambling, incoherent answer.First she claimed her friend had told her in person. Then she said her friend had unfriended her and their

Chapter 7 When the landslide hit, I was coming down a different mountain with a tour group.

The collapse wasn't far from us.Loose soil and rocks began raining down around us.The hikers were experienced, and they immediately got everyone to take cover.Luckily, our side of the mountain was stable. A few loose rocks fell, and then everything went still."Everyone okay?""We're fine, we're fine.""That scared me half to death. How does a landslide just come out of nowhere like that...""It has to be because of all the heavy rain over the last couple of days. Good thing we moved fast and got off that mountain early, or we'd have been right in it."My heart was pounding.I was grateful to be alive, but the disaster left me feeling utterly helpless.I'd been lost in the mountains, wandering in circles, but I'd been lucky enough to run into a group of hikers exploring the area. When they found out I was lost, they invited me to join them. The group leader had everyone count off, checked that no one was hurt, then led us down the nearest trail as fast as we could go.I booked a roo

Chapter 8 We went to high school together.

We had basically been each other's first love. Our school had a strict no-dating policy. Elliot and I were just starting to understand what we felt for each other when the dean of students caught us sneaking off to walk the track hand in hand.Elliot was the top student in our grade and came from an influential family. The dean didn't dare go after him, so he made me the scapegoat. The dean called me shameless, accused me of seducing Elliot, and said I could never make up for it if I ruined his future."Have your parents come to school. We'll begin expulsion proceedings."Elliot couldn't stand hearing anyone talk to me like that.He took all the blame himself. He even stood up to the dean."This has nothing to do with Eve. I'm the one who's been chasing her."Then I'm the shameless one. I'm the one who seduced her. Are you going to expel me?"It was our senior year, and Elliot had a real chance of earning the highest exam score in the city, maybe even in the entire state. His scores we

Chapter 9 Everyone says the best way to get over a relationship is to start a new one.

But with Elliot, it felt more like... picking up where we left off.Once he knew I was single, he did everything he could to win me back.I'd always been attracted to Elliot, and after all these years, that hadn't changed. His face was still exactly my type.Lasting a month and a half before giving in felt like an achievement. In high school, I'd only made it three days.Time had changed some things about both of us, but deep down, people don't really change.I quickly found my old rhythm with him.But just when I'd put the past behind me and my new life was finally getting on track, I ran into Sean.He showed up on crutches. He'd gotten so thin he barely looked like himself, and he was wearing the coat I'd bought him six months ago.It used to fit him perfectly. Now it hung loose on him.His eyes reddened the moment he saw me."Eve, do you know how long I've been looking for you?"How could you be so heartless and leave me without a word?!"I stepped out of reach when he tried to grab
