Chapter 1

The Alpha King, Lucian Blackthorne, replied to my email almost immediately."Think carefully before you decide. The Wastelands are a long way from here. You won't be able to go home often. If you've made up your mind, sign the contract."I opened the contract on my laptop just as my oldest brother, Adrian Ashbourne, came out of the basement training room and glanced at my screen."Off to another work trip?"He handed me the basement keys. They were still spattered with blood. "Before you leave, help me deal with two traitors who refuse to follow orders. Cecilia's still young, so don't bring her along."I didn't bother correcting him. They couldn't wait eight minutes for me. Why should they care where I worked or how long I'd be gone?Used plates sat at four places around the dining table. There were scraps of flatbread on them.Cecilia had two plates in front of her, but nothing was set out for me.My second brother, Gabriel Ashbourne, explained, "We only had time to make five

The next morning, I was woken up by Cecilia's sobs."Adrian… I've lost my moonstone…" she whined, curling up in Adrian's arms.Cecilia was a frail pup. Without Mom's milk, she hadn't grown as strong as the other pups. Adrian had used his Alpha blood to awaken the moonstone and hung it around Cecilia's neck, hoping it would help her grow stronger. Now that it was missing, she was beside herself."I had it when we got home yesterday. I went to sleep, and when I woke up, it was gone."Nathaniel hurried to comfort her. "Calm down. Do you remember where you went before bed last night?"Cecilia glanced at me."The only place I went was Selena's room.""Is it somewhere in your room?" Adrian asked sternly. Before I could answer, Gabriel headed upstairs. "Enough talking. Let's go look for it."They barged into my room with no regard for my privacy. As they rummaged through my things, Adrian reached for my wardrobe."This is my personal space," I warned, stepping in front of him. "Be

Cecilia's friends arrived just as my brothers got home. That meant that even if I'd gone with them, I would have had plenty of time to get ready for Cecilia's friends.By evening, Cecilia stood proudly among the crowd. The precious moonstone hung around her neck, and Mom's wolf fang bracelet circled her wrist. She looked like the only daughter this family had ever cared about.Just before we were due to leave, Adrian made an important announcement. He held up a property transfer agreement and declared that he was giving Cecilia the house that Mom and Dad had left us.Adrian used to say that the house belonged to all five of us. No matter how hard life got, we could always come home and find comfort in being together. Now, all three of my brothers had signed the agreement.Cecilia was the sole recipient of the house.Adrian handed me the papers. "We've all grown up and built lives for ourselves. Cecilia, on the other hand, is still young and needs a place to live.""You're do

Chapter 4

I went back to my room and packed my things. One small suitcase was all it took to hold the remnants of my 21 years in this house.I sat in the living room as I waited for the ride I'd booked.Cecilia had changed into another elegant dress. Afraid she might stumble, Nathaniel kept a hand out to steady her. When he noticed my suitcase, he frowned. "Do you really have to leave right now? It's Cecilia's big night!""Is this because of the house? Didn't we promise to make it up to you?" Gabriel said. "Stop being so petty. Cecilia's our youngest sister. We should be looking out for her."Cecilia looked at me timidly. "The house is legally mine now, but you can still come home and stay whenever you want."I let out a scornful laugh."You don't have to make concessions. What's yours is yours," Adrian objected. Then, he turned to me, his expression hardening. "Selena, we lost Mom and Dad when we were young. We're supposed to look out for one another. When did you become so selfish? If

After landing at the airport, I pulled out my phone to book a ride when someone waved their hand in front of me."Excuse me, are you Ms. Ashbourne?"I eyed the man warily and didn't answer. He quickly explained, "I'm the Beta Mr. Blackthorne sent to pick you up."He showed me his credentials, and Alpha King Lucian sent me a voice message confirming it was legitimate.I got into his SUV. As we drove, the city skyline gradually gave way to a vast, deserted wasteland. This was where my new life would begin.I crouched, scooped a handful of sandy soil, and brought it to my nose.It smelled raw and untouched.Suddenly, I heard rustling nearby.I immediately dropped into a defensive stance. "Who's there?"A gust of wind swept the sand. Slowly, a pair of golden eyes emerged from the dust. A cold light radiated from the figure, and the sheer force of his presence sent a chill through me.It was a tall man wearing a black cloak. His features were striking."Are you Alpha King Lucia

Three months later, the Wastelands had been transformed. The first stages of infrastructure were in place, and development was well underway.Lucian praised me in front of the Alphas from every pack. "Selena is a rare talent. When it comes to training people, strategic thinking, or even construction, she's exceptional. She's a credit to the entire werewolf community."Lucian asked for a photo of me and had it printed alongside his management guidelines. Copies circulated among the packs for everyone to study.Soon, my name was known far and wide. When Nathaniel and Gabriel saw my photo, they immediately went to get Adrian.Adrian smacked his forehead in frustration when he glanced at the photo. He was torn. He was stunned by how much I'd achieved, but angry that he and his brothers were only finding out about it now.Back on the night I left, after realizing that I had gone in anger, they considered going after me, but Cecilia burst into tears."If Selena was upset, she could'v

Gabriel went to my school, hoping that my teachers might know where to find me.My teacher eyed him suspiciously. "Are you really Selena's brother?""I am. Selena has three older brothers and a younger sister. It's all there in her student records," he explained with a helpless sigh. But the teacher still wasn't convinced. "That's strange. Why didn't any of you show up for her graduation, then?"Gabriel went still. It was all coming back to him. When I'd told them about my graduation, they'd been busy helping Cecilia choose a good college. They'd researched everything, from each school's history to its surrounding neighborhood and public transportation options. They wanted to make sure Cecilia would have the best possible environment for her studies. They ignored the message I sent to the family group chat.On graduation day, none of them showed up, no matter how long I waited. Disappointed, I eventually bought myself a bouquet of flowers.Gabriel was still reeling from the r

I folded my arms and shot Cecilia an indifferent look.I coldly asked, "What are you doing here?"Cecilia was flabbergasted. She raised her voice. "I'm here to take you home, of course! You've been gone for so long. Don't you miss us at all?""Not really," I replied flatly before turning back to work. The guards stopped Cecilia from entering the pack's territory.A few days later, my three brothers showed up with Cecilia in tow. They insisted on seeing me."Let them in," I ordered.I swallowed my anger. It was time to settle things with them head-on.The journey had clearly taken its toll as my brothers looked exhausted.Adrian spotted me immediately. The unfamiliar look in my eyes made his heart sink.He pushed through his unease and said, "Selena, that's enough. I've drawn up a new agreement. You have a share of the house now. It'll always be home for all five of us."He pulled the contract from his bag and held it out for me to see."Cecilia will give you the wolf fang b

Once silence settled over my office again, my gaze fell on the photo of Mom, Dad, and me on my desk."Mom, Dad, I've finally become the best version of myself."I was no longer held back by family ties that were never worth fighting for.…Two years later, I stood overlooking the thriving pack. We now had fully developed infrastructure.Lucian came up behind me and handed me a glass of red wine. "I owe my past self a thank you for choosing someone as talented as you."I laughed. Lucian praised me so often that I'd grown used to it.Even though I was far from my family, I still heard plenty about them.In the second year after Adrian returned to his pack, he continued to send me letters. He wanted to apologize and make amends. That stopped when a young, able-bodied werewolf accused him of neglecting his duties because he spent his days moping around and challenged him. Adrian's letters stopped coming after he lost the challenge.Gabriel came to see me once, hoping I'd forgive
