Chapter 1 The Thanksgiving Betrayal

They crowded around Trevor as they ushered him inside, then gathered around the dining table.I couldn't hear what they were saying, but through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I could see all the dishes spread across the table.Once everyone was seated, my dad raised a finger to his lips, signaling everyone to be quiet, then pulled out his phone.A second later, my phone rang with an incoming video call.I wiped away my tears and tapped the answer button with trembling fingers. My dad's loving face appeared on my screen. "Happy Thanksgiving, Tristan. Have you had dinner yet?"My mom squeezed into the frame beside him. "Are you home alone again? This is all our fault. We shouldn't have acted so rashly back then. Now, you don't have anyone to spend the holidays with."They'd say the same thing every year, making me feel incredibly guilty each time.I held back my tears and forced a smile. "Why did you make so much food for just the two of you?"My dad looked startled, and my mom

Chapter 2 The Family I Lost

I'd barely finished dumping the food into the trash when Allison called. When she saw how pale I looked, she frowned slightly. "I just got back to the hotel, Tristan. Why do you look so pale? Are you feeling sick?"I looked at her, a bitter taste filling my mouth. "Allison, tell me the truth. Where are you really?"A flicker of alarm crossed her eyes, but she quickly regained her composure. "Didn't I already tell you I'm on a business trip?"She got up and turned in a circle, holding her phone out to show me the hotel room."See? I'm at the hotel. Why are you imagining things again? I'll be home in two days at most. Just stay home and wait for me."Since she'd lost sight in her left eye, she always unconsciously tilted her phone to the right during our video calls. But this time, her shrunken left eye was right up against the camera, as if she wanted me to see it.My heart gave an involuntary twinge of pain.I didn't answer and simply hung up.Allison then transferred some mon

Chapter 3 The Final Straw

They walked in together, laughing and chatting. My mom spoke first. "We've bought almost everything the baby needs. Trevor's going to be a dad soon. We should get him a few outfits while we're at it."My dad chimed in. "Allison has a prenatal checkup tomorrow. Let's go shopping the day after instead. Have her tell Tristan she'll be back a day later."Allison replied calmly, "Okay. I'll call Tristan in a bit and tell him a meeting came up."Then, I heard Trevor asking my mom to get him his slippers and my dad to wash some fruit for him.Allison pulled out her phone as she headed upstairs. "I'll go to my room and video-call Tristan first."However, just as she reached the door, my phone started ringing inside the room.…When she saw me, her phone fell to the floor. That was when I noticed she was wearing a prosthetic left eye. It looked completely natural.Back then, I'd tried to convince her to wear one, but she'd refused. She'd said, "I want to remember this lesson for the r

Chapter 4 The Breaking Point

Trevor dropped to his knees again, choking back sobs."I'm sorry, Tristan. This is all my fault. I couldn't let go of Allison, so I came back to her. I never meant to take your place. I never forced Allison to divorce you. I know it's wrong, but I just want a little warmth in my life."My mom helped Trevor to his feet, looking at him with sympathy. When she looked at me, there was a hint of disgust in her eyes."Why do you have to make things so difficult for Trevor? With your personality, Allison would have found someone else, even if Trevor weren't in the picture."After hearing that, I could no longer stay on my feet. I slid down the wall and sank to the floor. My mom's expression softened slightly, and she told my dad to help me up."Didn't we keep this from you for your own good? Otherwise, your marriage to Allison would have fallen apart long ago."My dad hauled me to my feet and sighed. "Can't you just stay home and behave yourself? Trevor only wants to have a child with

Chapter 5 No Answer

Allison stayed at the hospital while Trevor underwent a full physical examination. The doctor said he was perfectly fine. She and Patrick Brooks, Tristan's father, took Trevor home. When they opened the door, they found bloodstains still on the floor. Caroline Ward, Tristan's mother, was asleep, leaning against the couch.Allison's heart lurched. "Where's Tristan? Mom, I asked you to look after him. Why is there blood on the floor?"Caroline woke with a start and rubbed her eyes. "He collapsed by the door, pretending to pass out. Then, he called 911 himself, so I didn't bother with him…"Allison hurriedly pulled out her phone and discovered more than a dozen missed calls. She immediately called Tristan, but the call went unanswered.Trevor looked a little annoyed by how worried she was. He slipped an arm around her. "Is the baby behaving in there, Allison?"Usually, whenever he said that, Allison would drop whatever she was doing and let him lean against her belly to talk to th

Chapter 6 The Price of Betrayal

Allison instinctively moved to block Trevor's way. "Trevor, we had a deal. You can't come here or show up in front of Tristan."Trevor froze, unable to believe what he was hearing."He's already left. Am I still not allowed inside? Also, I wasn't the one who appeared before him. He was the one who broke our agreement first. If he'd just stuck to seeing his parents during New Year's, none of this would have happened."Allison still stood in the doorway, refusing to budge.…Meanwhile, Trevor was so angry he couldn't find the words to respond. He'd thought he already meant more to Allison than Tristan did. After all, she was carrying his child.Tears immediately welled up in his eyes as he looked at her dejectedly. "My head hurts. Are you really not going to let me come in and sit down for a while?"Allison suddenly lost her patience."Don't talk to me about a headache. Tristan was alone in the hospital when he had a brain hemorrhage! If you hadn't pretended to have chest pains

Chapter 7 A Life Without Her

Trevor shouted, "He hates me. Why would he ever accept me as his brother?"He thought back to how Caroline had arranged for him and Tristan to become close friends. She told him about Tristan's interests and all the things they could talk about endlessly. From the very beginning, Trevor had approached Tristan with a purpose. Back then, his goal had been simple—to use his friendship with Tristan as a perfectly legitimate reason to get close to Caroline. He'd never expected things to turn out this way.Tristan and Allison started dating.Later, Trevor crossed the line, only to be rejected by Allison again and again. Just when he was ready to give up, she finally responded to his advances. After that, things quickly went too far.He kept telling himself that he'd simply met Allison at the wrong time. He even said, "Why don't you divorce Tristan…"But Allison had reacted as though he'd touched a nerve, and her expression turned frighteningly cold. "Don't even think you can have what

Chapter 8 One Last Chance

I clenched my fists and uttered coldly, "Whether you two stay together or not has nothing to do with me. You and I are completely over."I turned to leave, but Allison followed me, refusing to give up. "Tristan, how can you be so heartless? We were together for over a decade, and married for eight…"I stopped in my tracks. "Me, heartless? You spent half of our eight-year marriage cheating on me, and you think I'm the heartless one?"You went blind in one eye for his sake, and you continued seeing him behind my back. You were even going to have his child. So, tell me, who's the heartless one here?"Allison's face went pale, and her hands began to tremble. "No! Tristan, I didn't do it on purpose…"But what good would any more excuses do? There was no turning back time, and nothing I'd lost could ever be recovered.Allison crouched on the floor, covering her face as she sobbed aloud.I didn't look back. The first time she betrayed me, she and my parents had schemed together to kee

Chapter 9 A New Beginning

Allison spoke with such heartfelt sincerity that listening to her made me sick."Do you really think giving up on you was easy for me? This wasn't something that happened overnight. It took years, not just a day or two. Allison, what gives you the right to act like admitting you're wrong means I have to forgive you? I have no lingering feelings for you. You disgust me. Get out."Allison knelt in the darkness, tears in her eyes.In the end, she said nothing. She got up and walked out.I closed the window and locked it. Then, I went back to bed, but I didn't sleep a wink.…Early the next morning, I heard the door next door shut. Allison had returned to her home country.Life returned to the quiet I'd known before. The only difference was that rumors about Chloe and me started spreading around the office.I made a point of keeping my distance, but she continued to act as close to me as ever.Gradually, I stopped caring. When people teased us, I learned to laugh it off just like
