Chapter 1

Brett Walker's lips curled into a triumphant smirk as he watched Jenny Morse distance herself from me."Ah, a humble agriculturist," he said, his tone dripping with fake reverence as he stepped back, as though I carried a contagious disease."Still, Mr. Poole, a venue like this calls for a little effort. This is a Morse family gathering, not dinner in the barn with your ranch hands."I looked down at my casual attire. I had changed my clothes specifically to meet Jenny's family. It wasn't expensive, but at least it was presentable.Brett appraised me with blatant contempt. "Is that off the rack? The threads are practically unraveling. Jenny, couldn't you buy your boyfriend something presentable?"I frowned, bristling at the insult, but Jenny's relatives quickly jumped in."Seriously, Jenny. You're a daughter of the Morse family. How did you end up with someone so low-rent?""A classic case of beauty and the beast. What a waste."Jenny's face flushed bright red. Before I could

Once the food was served, Brett raised his glass and delivered a touching, heartfelt toast.Jackson and Avery joined in enthusiastically, hailing him as their future son-in-law at every turn.A few rounds later, everyone was feeling buzzed.Brett suddenly produced a gift box from his bag and presented it to Jenny. "Jenny, I brought this back from Auristelle for you. It's nothing extravagant, but I thought it would suit you perfectly."Surprised, Jenny accepted the box and opened it to reveal a diamond-accented necklace."Wow, that's gorgeous! That must have cost thousands of dollars, right?" one of the female relatives squealed in envy.Jenny ran her fingers over the necklace, her eyes welling with emotion. "Brett, this is far too expensive. I can't possibly accept this…""Take it. In my eyes, no one deserves it more than you," Brett said, taking her hand affectionately.Jenny made a half-hearted attempt to pull back before letting him hold her hand.I watched the scene unfold

"Beg you?" Jenny laughed, as if she had just heard the most ridiculous joke of her life."Hayden, have you lost your mind? I'd rather starve to death or jump off a cliff than ever beg a broke cattle farmer like you!""Fine." I nodded before turning to walk out.I had barely reached the door when Brett called out, "Hold on a second!"Holding the bill in his hand, he looked at me with a smirk. "Mr. Poole, I'm treating the family elders and relatives today. Since you're breaking up with Jenny, you're not a guest anymore."You've been sitting here breathing in the aroma of our food the whole time, so you should pay for your own share."The relatives burst into laughter once again."Exactly! You can't just freeload off us, can you?""Weren't you acting all tough a second ago? Pay up!"Jenny glared at me coldly. "Hayden, don't make me despise you even more. Pay your share before you step out that door."Hearing that, I couldn't help but let out a bitter chuckle.I hadn't intended

Chapter 4

Early the next morning, I was jolted awake by the persistent ringing of my phone.I glanced at the screen to see an unfamiliar number. After a brief pause, I answered. "Hello, who's this?""Hayden, you bastard! What the hell did you do?"It was Jenny.I pulled the phone away from my ear and rubbed my temples. "Jenny? We're broken up. Is there something you need?""Broken up? Stop playing dumb!" Jenny roared through the receiver. "Did you have something to do with this? Why did our supplier suddenly refuse to deliver beef to us this morning?"So that was what this was about. My team certainly moved fast.I sat up slowly from the bed and lit a cigarette. "Ah, that. What's the matter? I thought your grand steakhouse was far too high-class to ever run out of steak.""Hayden! Don't you take that sarcastic tone with me!" Jenny snapped."I know you raise cattle out in the countryside and know a few local suppliers. Did you get them to hold back our shipments on purpose? I'm warning y

The silence stretched thin for three seconds. Then, the shock in Jenny's eyes warped into pure rage and contempt. She rushed over, pounding her fist on the car door like a raving lunatic."Hayden, have you completely lost your mind? Why did you rent a luxury car to sit here? Are you doing this on purpose to humiliate me just because you know we're here to discuss serious business?"Snapping back to his senses, Brett pointed a finger at me, flustered and incensed. "Fucking hell, you nearly gave me a heart attack! I thought you were actually the boss!"He circled the Rolls-Royce once before spitting on the pavement with utter disdain."Not bad, Hayden. Renting a ride like this just to stalk Jenny? A single day's rent on this thing probably ate through six months of your farm's profit! The sheer vanity of a dirt-poor loser like you is almost impressive!""Hayden, don't think renting a luxury car makes you any better than you are," Jenny said, her gaze dripping with repulsion."You

I stepped in front of the two frozen figures and looked down at Brett. "Who was it you said wasn't worthy of greeting whom?"Brett's knees buckled, and he collapsed onto the ground.Arrogant as he was, he had spent enough time in the business world to know what it meant when a crowd of high-level executives greeted a single man like this with absolute reverence."M-Mr. Poole…" he stammered, cold sweat instantly soaking through his shirt."Hayden… You're the head of Poole Corp?" Jenny muttered, her entire reality crumbling around her."How is that possible… You're just a rancher in the countryside…"Trembling, she reached out, trying to grab my sleeve.I sidestepped her attempt and brushed off my cuff with disgust. "Jenny, didn't you say you'd rather starve to death than beg me for anything? Now, every single shipment of premium beef across all three states runs through my hands."I leaned close to her ear and whispered coldly, "You were right. I am a cattle farmer. But those ca

Jackson scrambled to his feet, trembling in terror, before pulling Avery and Jenny up and dragging them off. "Get up! Let's go! Stop making a fool of us!"Jenny opened her mouth to protest, but Jackson landed a stinging slap across her face. "Haven't you brought enough shame upon this family? This is all thanks to that useless bastard you brought home! Get in the car!"Watching their pathetic, hurried retreat through the screen, I switched off the intercom.Dalton handed me a thin file. "Mr. Poole, we ran a background check. Brett was never an executive in Auristelle. He was just a farmhand."He got fired after getting caught stealing cash from his employer and was forced to come back here when he couldn't survive over there."I flipped through his file, letting out a dry chuckle. No wonder he was so sensitive to the smell of cow dung. It was an occupational hazard. After being driven away, the Morses sat dejectedly in their restaurant. As Brett sat alongside them, a calculatin

The news of Morse Steakhouse being shut down instantly trended on local social media.Hospitalized from sheer rage, Jackson fought for his life while Avery wailed hysterically in the hallway.Meanwhile, Brett was already plotting his escape to dodge the fallout.Taking full advantage of the purchasing authority Jackson had entrusted to him, he pocketed massive kickbacks from the tainted meat shipment. He also secretly embezzled the Morse family's remaining one million dollars in liquid assets, transferring the money to an overseas account in installments.Unbeknownst to him, I was watching every single move he made."Mr. Poole, Brett just bought a flight to Thelvaria for tonight," Adam reported."Trying to run?" I chuckled darkly. "I'll take back what he took from me, and he'll pay for every dollar he stole from the Morses.""Should I notify the police?" Adam asked."No rush. Let him run a little longer." I stood up and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window."We'll brin

I said, "I sent you this video days ago. You chose not to watch it. You chose to trust him instead. You picked this path. Now you have to walk it to the bitter end, even on your knees."Jenny stared at the video on the screen, paralyzed as if struck by lightning.I had warned her long ago, but she was the one who personally closed every door of survival for herself."No… That's not true…" She collapsed helplessly into the muddy water."Adam, let's go." I rolled up the window without giving her a single backward glance. For someone like her, pity was nothing short of cruelty to myself. At Thelvaria Airport, Brett thought he had made a clean getaway. The moment his flight landed, he was just about to hail a cab and kick off his lavish lifestyle when several uniformed police officers pinned him straight to the ground."Brett Walker, you're under arrest for grand fraud and corporate embezzlement. You're wanted by the Calveria Police Department. Come with us!"Brett thrashed franti
