Josie's Point of View For some reason, the image of that night flashed through my mind, of Colt barely a hair's breadth from my face. My breath turned hot and tight.Colt looked away without a trace and, smiling, spoke the welcome on behalf of the Hawthornes. "Welcome, our dear in-laws. Please, sit. Scarlett is still upstairs and will be down shortly."The four Callahans took their seats. At the wedding, the two families had already been introduced to one another. I was the only one who had missed it, so Wyatt took it upon himself to introduce me. "This is my sister, Josie. She was away on a business trip, and her flight was delayed, so she couldn't make it to the wedding in time."He was good at making things up.I sneered inwardly, but on the surface I nodded politely to everyone on the Hawthorne side. They returned my smile warmly and introduced themselves in turn.Looking closely at their faces, I was astonished by how strong this family's genes were. Uncles, aunts, cousins, near

Josie's Point of View I put the plan into action that same afternoon.I gritted my teeth and bought an expensive fountain pen at the department store. For a man like Colt, a cheap gift would leave me unable to hold my head up the next time we met.Back at the office, I stood waiting for the elevator, lifting the bag to look at it. Three months of salary, gone, just like that.Ding.The doors slid open.I stepped in, looked up, and saw Wyatt standing inside. On instinct, I turned to walk right back out."Am I a ghost?" Wyatt said coldly.I stopped. He was far worse than a ghost. He was a demon who had stirred up trouble in my life for thirteen years and only now shown his terrible true form.I eased my tight breathing, turned around, and stepped politely aside, keeping my distance. "Mr. Callahan, I am on the twenty-first floor. Please go ahead."Wyatt reached out and pressed 61.That was the rooftop! The elevator began to rise."I'm not going to that floor. Please press twenty-one for

Josie's Point of View I could hear the sarcasm in her tone, but I couldn't stoop to her level. Thirteen years of raising me, and even if the affection had been fake, the things she'd given me were real."Work's been busy. Come in and sit," I said, setting down the clothes in my hands.Loretta walked in and glanced at the clothes on the bed. "Another business trip?"I smiled faintly and shook my head. "No. This time I'm going on a trip for myself.""Oh, a trip. You really do live comfortably." Loretta smiled, and then, without warning, she raised her hand and slapped me hard across the face.Smack! My head whipped to the side, and a clear red handprint rose on my cheek.I was stunned. I covered my burning face, but I didn't cry. I looked at her with calm eyes. "Give me one reason for hitting me.""A reason?" Loretta held up a small box. "This is the reason!"Inside the clear plastic case, two tablets were plainly visible. My gaze froze in shock. "You switched my pills!"Now I finally

Josie's Point of ViewI hid in my apartment all day, and the more I thought about it, the angrier I got. I had swallowed every bit of pain to cover for Wyatt and protect that heartless man. Right up to the last moment, I never exposed our relationship. And what did I get in return? A whole bucket of filthy water for the entire city to gawk at.Too kind, was I? They liked playing it public? Fine. Then let's make it all public and see whose face is lost in the end. After a full day of being tortured by online comments, my head was pounding and my reason had been thrown to the dogs. I changed clothes and left the apartment, ready to head to the Callahan house. The sky outside was just starting to darken.I walked toward my car while a van came toward me, and I paid it no mind. But just as I pressed my key fob and opened the car door, four men in black suits climbed out of the van and, without a word, seized me."Who are you? What do you want? Let go! Help!" Realizing something was wrong,

Josie's Point of ViewI sensed the desire radiating off him and started to panic. My face burned as I tried to pull my hand free, and a hundred little deer stampeded in my chest. The air turned thick with tension. The harder I pulled, the closer he drew me, until the tips of our noses were a hair apart, and even the brush of fine hairs on skin made my whole body tingle. Our breathing grew ragged. My mind was a complete mess. Was he going to kiss me? Should I close my eyes?He tilted his head, and when I felt him come even closer, I squeezed my eyes shut in a panic and froze.Time slipped by.One second. One minute. A minute and a half. Two. His breath never moved away, and it never landed either. My heart hung up in the clouds, neither falling nor rising. After three minutes..."Don't wear my shirts." The soft, light voice rippled in my ear.I plummeted from the clouds with a splat, my expression ridiculous."Pfft!" Colt pressed a hand on my slender shoulder, shaking with laughter. "J
