Chapter 1

"Oh, 'Supreme Leader,' is it? I bet he's just some guy you picked up in the red-light district."Cecilia Malvezzi, the new Don's daughter, snatched my satellite phone and smashed it on the marble floor."What, your crippled husband can't satisfy you, so you've been collecting side pieces behind his back to fight your battles for you?"I stared at the shattered phone on the floor and took a deep breath, fighting the urge to kill her."Ms. Malvezzi, I'll say this one last time."You have the wrong person."Take your assassins and get out now, and I'll pretend none of this ever happened."Cecilia burst out laughing. She turned to the Sicilian elite watching us."Did you all hear that? A fake from the slums is telling me to get out?"Laughter rippled through the crowd."Lowlifes these days sure have some nerve, Ms. Malvezzi.""Exactly. And she dragged along a cripple who's been stripped of his power, like that makes her somebody. She really doesn't know her place."Cecilia came closer, her

Leon and I were thrown onto the red carpet in the main hall.Cecilia lifted the hem of her gown and swept up the steps to the stage at the front of the ballroom."Everyone, quiet down for a moment."The room fell silent.Every eye turned to Leon and me.Cecilia snapped her fingers. The giant holographic screen behind her lit up.On the screen was a blurry candid photo. The photo showed a woman getting into a bulletproof black Maybach. In profile, she looked a lot like me.And on the wrist resting against the car door, plain as day, was a very distinctive piece of jewelry.Cecilia pointed at the screen, then at me."This is the tramp in that photo, the one who's been trying to pass herself off as my missing sister!"She faked her identity and brought Leon along as a shield to climb the social ladder."Does she really think everyone in Sicily is blind?"Look at the face in this photo. Doesn't it look just like her? And the jewelry on that wrist, isn't it identical to what she's wearing?"

Bang. Bang. Bang."Miss Evelyn, are you in there?"All the guests turned to the doors in terror.Hope flared in my chest. My brother's assassin squad in Sicily had arrived.I tore free of the bodyguards and screamed myself hoarse at the doors."I'm in here!"My heart pounding, I yelled as loud as I could."I'm here! Save Leon! Bring a medical team in here right now!"Cecilia's expression faltered, then turned vicious again."That guy you picked up in the red-light district actually has the guts to come here with his men?"She smoothed her rumpled skirt and let out a cold laugh."A bunch of street rats who can't even show their faces in daylight think they can crash a Malvezzi party?"They must have a death wish!"She grabbed the radio clipped to her chest and gave the order."Perimeter squad! Riot squad, bring the heavy weapons! Everyone, move out!"Cut down that trash outside with machine-gun fire! I want to see severed limbs!"Start the level-one lockdown right now and seal every bla

Chapter 4

Victor adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses. His gaze shifted between me and the giant holographic screen. As Cecilia's sister's fiancé, he could end this whole farce with a single denial. But Victor said nothing. He lowered his eyes and guiltily avoided mine. When he looked up, his face was a mask of grief and disappointment."Evelyn."I've told you before. There's no point pretending to be my fiancée."Why do you keep chasing after me?"You even... You even came to Cecilia's banquet pretending to be her sister?"My eyes widened. I went cold all over."What did you say?"My voice shook."Are you crazy? I've never pretended to be your fiancée! I don't even know you people!"But Victor wouldn't look at me anymore. He turned to Cecilia, his face full of regret."Cecilia, I'm sorry. I didn't handle this well."She's been using that face to throw herself at me and take your sister's place. It's partly my fault. I just missed your sister too much."Cecilia's face twisted with rage."You bitch!"

Chapter 5

Several tall, lean figures stepped over the wreckage, backlit by the opening behind them. The man in front wore a fitted black trench coat and toyed with a dark gold Browning pistol. It was my brother Arthur, the supreme leader of the Assassins' Alliance."Arthur..."Everything I'd held back broke loose. Tears poured down my face.Arthur scanned the hall.He saw my swollen cheek and bloody hands. Then he saw Leon lying motionless by the electric grid, and his expression turned to ice."You have a death wish."Arthur didn't have to lift a finger. The Alliance's elite fighters surged forward and slammed their rifle butts into the backs of the two bodyguards holding me down. The two men crumpled before they could even scream.Free at last, I ignored my injuries and scrambled to Leon."Arthur! Save him! Save Leon, hurry!"Behind Arthur stood Alexander Brandt, the Council's chief medical officer, known as "Death's Bane."He rushed over with a silver emergency kit."Miss Evelyn, please move

Cecilia froze, then scoffed."Quit putting on a show."You think one phone call can bankrupt the Malvezzi family? Who do you think you are?"Just then, Cecilia's comm device buzzed furiously. She answered impatiently."Hello? Father, what is it?"Her father's furious roar came through the speaker."You ungrateful brat! Who the hell did you cross?"The Council cut off every supply route we have! Every black market has dropped us! Our overseas accounts are frozen solid!"The Malvezzi family... We're finished!"Cecilia's comm device dropped to the floor, and the screen shattered. Her eyes went wide as she stared at the people in front of her."Who... who are you people?""Who are we?"My father's intelligence officer adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses. He threw a thick stack of documents in Cecilia's face."Take a good look. This is the head of the Council, and this is the supreme leader of the Assassins' Alliance."Cecilia crumpled to the floor, shaking. The Council and the Assassins' Alli

Chapter 7

Cecilia stared at the woman's face in the clear photo. The woman was nestled in Victor's arms, smiling seductively. The truth was out.In that moment, all of Cecilia's arrogance and certainty turned into one big joke. She'd ruined the Malvezzi family with her own hands, all for someone who'd murdered her sister and used her as a pawn!"Ahh!"Screaming, Cecilia lunged at Victor and grabbed his throat."I'll kill you! I'll kill you, you animal!"They rolled across the broken glass, clawing at each other until they bled.Arthur watched without a trace of pity.He came over, crouched beside me, and gently wiped the dust from my face."Evelyn, you must have been so scared."His ruthless eyes softened only when he looked at me.I shook my head, still watching Alexander work on Leon."I'm fine, Arthur."Leon..."Alexander wiped the sweat from his forehead and let out a long breath."His heart rate and blood pressure are stable."He's out of danger for now, but his nervous system is badly dama

By dawn, news of the Malvezzi family's downfall had shaken the underworld. The once-mighty family lost everything overnight, and the Assassins' Alliance took over all of its territory. The new Don tried to fight back, so Arthur's men riddled him with bullets and dumped his body in the sea. They threw Cecilia and Victor into the lowest level of the Alliance's dungeon.I didn't return to base with my father and brother right away.I wanted to settle this score myself. The Alliance's dungeon reeked of blood.Cecilia hung from a rack in iron chains, her hair tangled and her cheeks swollen. Nothing remained of the arrogant mafia princess.Victor lay curled up in the filthy water in one corner, covered in whip marks."Ms. Malvezzi."I looked down at her."Didn't you say that in Sicily, your rules were the law?"So tell me, what are you going to offer for your life now?"Cecilia stared at me in terror and strained against her chains."Evelyn! Let me go! I know I was wrong!"That animal Victor

Chapter 9

I went to a sterile private room on the top floor of the Council's medical wing. The only sound was the steady beeping of the monitors.I changed into an isolation gown, opened the door, and tiptoed inside.Leon was propped up in bed. His face was pale, but his breathing was steady.A state-of-the-art biological nerve brace had been implanted in his spine, and he was wrapped in thick bandages. When he heard the door open, he turned his head. His eyes had seemed lifeless ever since he'd lost his power. Now they lit up with a soft glow the moment he saw me."Evelyn."His voice was soft and hoarse, the voice of a man who'd barely survived.Holding back tears, I hurried to the bed and took his outstretched hand."I'm here."I buried my face in his palm and felt its warmth."I'm sorry, Leon. It's all my fault. I never should have taken you to that banquet..."If I hadn't gone there just for fun, he would never have been caught in this mess or come so close to dying.Leon turned his hand to

I froze.Since the ambush that cost him the use of his legs, Leon had shut himself away in the safe house. He'd endured everything in silence, almost as if he were living in exile. This was the first time he'd spoken so fiercely about taking back what he'd lost.I leaned back and looked into his eyes."Why would you say that?"Leon lowered his gaze, his lashes shadowing his pale face."They... bullied you."He meant Cecilia and the assassins."I... couldn't stand up, and I couldn't protect you."Self-blame and anger filled his voice. He'd shielded me from the first blow, but he hadn't been able to stop the humiliation that followed. My heart aching, I cupped his face in my hands."Leon, you already did better than anyone."You didn't back down. You risked your life to protect me."To me, you'll always be the strongest Don there is."But Leon shook his head, stubborn as ever, and caught my wrist."It's not enough. Not even close."He raised his head sharply, and in his eyes I saw the co
