Oh, absolutely, the BBC 'Worst Witch' series from the late 90s is a total comfort watch. It nails that cozy, slightly dated British boarding school vibe in a way the later shows don't. The special effects are hilariously bad – think flying broomsticks held up by visible wires – but that's part of the charm. The actress who plays Mildred, I can never remember her name, really captures that endearing, clumsy desperation.

There's also the 1986 movie, which is darker and weirder. Tim Curry as the Grand Wizard is a performance you can't unsee, all campy menace. It deviates a lot from the books, but it has its own cult following. I wouldn't start there, though; it's more for completists after they've soaked in the main series.

The adaptations are a mixed bag. The early 00s ITV series with Miss Hardbroom is the definitive version for me; it just feels the most 'real' within its magical setting. Later shows feel like they're trying too hard to be hip. I'd skip the animated one altogether – it's completely forgettable. Stick to the live-action ones, especially if you grew up with the books.

Honestly, my opinion might be unpopular, but I find a lot of the adaptations a bit too sanitized compared to the books. The CBBC 'Worst Witch' revival is very bright and bubbly, which is fine for kids, but it loses some of the original's slight edge of melancholy and Mildred's genuine social struggles. She's more just generically quirky.

That said, the 2017 Netflix movie 'The Worst Witch' is surprisingly solid. It bridges the old and new tones decently. Bella Ramsey as Mildred is perfectly cast – she has that wonderful, stubborn resilience. It condenses a lot, but the heart is there. Worth a watch if you want a modern take that still feels respectful.
