My partner and I read different ones simultaneously and swapped after. So we started with two different books at the same time. It was fun to compare notes on the different authors' approaches to the 'twist' concept right away. So your starting point could be 'whichever one your reading buddy isn't starting with'.

My starting point was a random recommendation from a bookstore employee. I asked for something fun and twisty, and she handed me 'As Old As Time'. That personal, human suggestion meant more than any online list. If you have a good local bookstore, just ask. Let a fellow book lover make the choice for you.

I'd check Goodreads reviews for the ones that specifically say 'even if you're not a Disney fan'. Those reviews often point to the books that stand strongest as independent fantasy novels. 'As Old As Time' and 'What Once Was Mine' get that comment a lot. Starting with a book that works on its own might be more satisfying for an adult reader who isn't fully in the Disney ecosystem.

The beauty is there's no continuity lockout. You could read them alphabetically by title if you wanted. 'As Old As Time', 'Conceal, Don't Feel', 'Go the Distance'... It's as good a system as any. It's weirdly satisfying to see them lined up on a shelf in title order after you've read them, too.

For me, the order was dictated by my kid. She wanted to read 'As Old As Time' because she loves Belle, so we read it together. It was a great shared experience, and I got into the series through that lens. So if you have a younger family member interested, maybe let their curiosity choose your starting point. It adds a whole other layer of enjoyment.

When desire takes over, can love truly follow?
I adore interconnected standalones, and this series is a prime example of why order matters. The Easter eggs are half the fun! A mention of a vacation in book two that becomes a setting in book four. A cryptic comment from Christian in book one that finally gets explained in his own book. If you read them randomly, those connections become meaningless or, worse, spoilers. Reading 1 through 4 turns the series into a rich tapestry where every thread is placed intentionally. You're not just reading four romances; you're watching a whole social universe evolve.
I'd group them by format rather than content. Start with a short story collection to sample her style. Then, try a novel to see her sustain a narrative. Finally, dip into her children's books or folktales to see how she simplifies her themes for younger audiences.
This three-step approach gives you a full panorama of her capabilities. For the short story, I vote for 'The Day I Stopped Drinking Milk'. For the novel, 'Mahashweta' is powerful. For folktales, 'The Magic Drum' is charming. This isn't an order of quality, but an order of exposure. You'll come away with a comprehensive understanding of why she's such a beloved figure in Indian literature.
