Chapter books for new readers can serve as stepping stones between the world of picture books and longer novels. Many of us remember the first chapter book we read when we were around 6 or 7 years old. Chapter books are written for children aged 6 to 10 years old or so, depending on the child’s reading ability. With larger print, shorter chapters and often an illustration on every other page or so, these books are often ideal for newly confident readers who need a little more support with their reading but also want to feel challenged.

These books offer the simplest language yet a wide vocabulary, and straight-forward yet interesting plots. Many books are part of a series, and there are many that have been loved by kids in the 6+ age range. I know of several 5-year-olds who are reading chapter books. Conversely, I have 8-year-old friends who prefer to read picture books. It really depends on the child and where they are on their reading journey. Books for this age range are generally going to have relatable main characters and simple enough plot lines to engage kids but also offer sufficient challenge to make reading worthwhile for them.

The books are written for kids who have just learned phonics and are not yet ready to read complex language. They’re short and simple with straightforward dialogue and relatable storylines about things like friendship, school and family. Many chapter books include reading level indicators in the back, like Lexile 300L or Guided Reading Level M. While some kids can read chapter books by the time they’re five, others won’t be ready until they’re eight or so. Most series for this age group of readers combine humor with easy language. Examples are Narwhal and Jelly and the Owl Diaries.

Instead, it immerses the reader in the world of Omakayas and they learn along with her. Because kids in this age group hate to be talked down to, this book is perfect. The daily life of the main character and her family is depicted with such care that the reader could almost learn to do these things themselves.
