Exploring the works of the Queen of the Gothic Fiction, Anne Rice, is like trying to untangle a huge, intricately knotted tapestry. The books are connected, yes, but in no particular, strict order. Her famous Vampire Chronicles (Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, Queen of the Damned) form a beautiful trilogy of character studies on the iconic creatures of the night, including the enigmatic Lestat de Laigon and the tortured Louis de Pointe du Lac. But Rice also wrote other very different novels and series of novels – her Mayfair Witches novels eventually merge with the Vampire Chronicles in two novels, Merrick and Blackwood Farm. How cool is that secret door between worlds? I bet it will feel like finding hidden treasures or secret levels in a favorite video game.

I have also read many of her earlier works, like ‘The Feast of All Saints’, which are not supernatural in nature but are equally as engaging and of similar historical style. The large range of novels that include her infamous Vampire Chronicles series and her more recently created and incredibly engrossing Mayfair Witches series blend perfectly with her more philosophical Christ the Lord novels (Out of Egypt and The Road to Cana). In Rice’s novel Blackwood Farm, vampires are mentored by witches and ancient lore abounds; Rice seems to be having the time of her life here, just playing in her own writing universe. And because much of Rice’s work is set in her favorite city, New Orleans, she even manages to include that in her various novels and make the city a sort of character in and of itself. It’s not as complex as, say, Marvel’s many interconnected novels, but as far as it pertains to Gothic literature, it is extremely impressive.

This is a common problem for long-running series – as the series goes on, the desire to keep the world coherent can stifle the sense of wonder and the ability to tell really new, standalone stories. A completely new, entirely unrelated vampire would have been more interesting than just another offshoot of the Egyptian bloodline, for example. The connections can feel like a cage as well as a web, limiting the potential of the series in order to service its entirety.

Honestly, I am getting a little tired of the interconnectedness of all the characters and stories. It seems like every new character is going to be someone’s long lost sire or the reincarnation of some long deceased witch from book two. It sort of closes the system of the books and takes away from the sense of wonder that I feel is so important to the early books. The mystery of the vampires’ origin, the haunting of the Mayfair house in the early books were so powerful just because they were unknown.

Most of the really great mysteries are solved in later books, and connections between characters that in early books were thrilling because unknown are in later books more of a hassle to manage than thrilling. Connections can make a vast world feel small. Right now I am in the mood for a book that stands alone, with plenty of mystery, lots of atmosphere, interesting characters. If it has connections to earlier books, that is okay with me, but they should not be the main focus of the book.

Since the reader is already lost in the large tapestry of characters and stories in The Vampire Chronicles, they might as well be led by the hand through the various connections and explore the fun ways of looking at characters and their places within the entire universe. For example, the rather fascinating side character of David Talbot, the head of the Talamasca and also a vampire, could be the anchor to read the various books. First, we read the book about the vampires from the point of view of the human scholar who later becomes one of them. Then we could jump to the Mayfair saga, where Talbot is the famous investigator. And finally, we get to read the last two Chronicles of the Vampire, where we follow the very complicated life of this charismatic character.

A character-centric reading of Ann Rice’s universe reveals a series of intimate biographies rather than a sprawling universe. We can see how different characters experience the same event and how the same set of rules can look to different people. Above all, we find that connections between characters are primarily of a personal nature, and often these people are immortal but still human. A single thread can reveal far more about Rice’s universe than a view of the whole tapestry.

While reading them in publication order is safest for fully grasping all the connections between books, it is also possible to read only the Vampire Chronicles or only the Mayfair Witches books. The books written by Rice after her return to Catholicism have a distinctly different ‘feel’ and in some cases even ‘retroact’ (changed back) previously written stories. Because of this, some of the fans have problems with her current writing.
