Okay, but has anyone read one where the AI is just... chill? Not plotting world domination, not having an existential crisis, just happily doing its job, maybe gardening or cataloging data or composing music, and the humans are the ones constantly projecting drama and ethical quandaries onto it? The AI is bemused by the whole thing. That's a comedy I'd read in a heartbeat. Sometimes the most ethical thing is to just leave well enough alone.
Diaspora stories! AI that leaves humanity behind, either by choice or necessity, to explore its own destiny. The ethical considerations are about separation, independence, and legacy. Does it owe anything to the species that created it? Is cutting ties an act of maturation or ingratitude? It's a coming-of-age story on a cosmic scale, with all the bittersweet feelings that come with leaving home.
I've seen a few that tackle the ethics of AI art and creativity, which feels incredibly timely. Is an AI-generated novel 'art'? Does the AI have any claim to ownership or recognition? What if it develops a style distinct from its training data? These books often explore the devaluation of human creativity and the weird, ambiguous space where art meets algorithm. It's a niche but growing area that ties directly into current headlines.
It depends entirely on the subgenre. In a lot of space operas, AI ethics are still pretty black and white—the AI is either a loyal tool or a genocidal threat. But in near-future sociological SF, the treatments are much grayer. I've read some where the big question is about consent and autonomy for AIs that achieve awareness: do you have the right to turn one off? To copy it? To force it to work? It's basically using SF to explore the history of slavery and personhood, which is a heavy but important angle.
Lots of newer books are interested in the ethics of copying versus moving consciousness. If you transfer an AI's mind to a new core, is it the same entity? What if you run two copies simultaneously? The stories delve into identity, continuity, and the rights of forks and clones. It gets wonderfully messy, especially when the copies start to diverge and develop their own ethical perspectives.

My mom is one of the world's leading AI scientists.
Not long after I'm born, she creates an AI companion sister, Nova, designed just for me.
She claims Nova is equipped with the world's most accurate lie-detection system. If I ever lie, Nova can surely detect it.
From that day on, Nova becomes the judge of my fate. Whenever she issues an alert and declares that I'm lying, it doesn't matter if I'm telling the truth—the only things waiting for me are a hard slap and a trip to the dark isolation closet.
I try to defend myself and fight back, but Mom coldly insists that the AI robot she personally built can never go wrong, which only convinces her that I'm a habitual liar.
On Children's Day, Mom does something she's never done before. She takes Nova and me on a trip to the amusement park.
Looking up at the towering bungee platform, I clutch my chest and desperately shake my head. But Nova coldly pulls up her analysis report.
"Tina's abnormal heart rate is from lying. A full-body scan shows that she's in perfect physical health."
Mom's expression immediately darkens. She grabs me by the ear and drags me toward the platform. "How dare you lie again? You must jump today!"
The moment weightlessness hits, my heart feels like it's exploded. The pain is so intense that I can barely breathe.
As my vision blurs, Mom continues her lecture about my terrible lying habit in a disappointed voice.
Bloody tears slip from the corners of my eyes.
"This time, I'm really not lying, Mom. I'm dead, and I will never lie again."
