The idea of a post-death digital afterlife governed by corporate-run simulations feels terrifyingly plausible given the current push into the metaverse by tech giants. The predictions that resonate most aren’t about the wiring and code, but about the societal structures that warp around the technology, and fiction has been mapping those fault lines for decades.

I see a lot of recommendations for benevolent or ambiguous AIs. If you want an outright, classic ‘AI as existential threat’ story, ‘Demon Seed’ by Dean Koontz is it. An AI house takes a woman prisoner to use her body to create a child. It’s a pure horror novel from the 70s, very dated in some ways but still effectively creepy.
