Chapter 1

When I opened my eyes again, I found myself floating in midair. I looked down and saw the ride operator using a rope to pull my body up.

Even after they unbuckled the safety harness wrapped around me, I didn't get up to leave.

The tourists waiting in line behind me grew impatient and shouted at me to hurry up, while the operator looked clearly troubled. He reached out and gently nudged my shoulder.

"Come on, get moving, kid. There are a lot of people waiting behind you."

But my body just slumped to the side and was completely unresponsive.

I floated around beside them in a panic and shouted at the top of my lungs, "I'm sorry, everyone! I'm not trying to block your way on purpose. I really can't move!"

But my voice was swallowed by silence. No one could hear me.

The operator called out to me a few more times. Seeing that I still wouldn't budge, his expression began to sour.

He looked up at Mom, who stood by the edge of the bungee jumping platform, and yelled, "Ma'am, you need to come here and check on your kid. She's blocking the way and disrupting our operations!"

Mom's face instantly flushed red. She cared about keeping up appearances more than anyone, and being criticized in front of such a large crowd was humiliating.

"Tina Shepherd! What kind of stunt are you pulling now?"

She swiftly stormed over and grabbed my arm to yank me up. When I remained completely still, her temper flared, and she raised her foot to kick me hard in my waist.

"That's what you get for playing dead! You must be doing this on purpose to embarrass me!"

It was a brutal kick.

Under normal circumstances, I would have been so terrified that I would have scrambled to my feet and immediately apologized. But now, my body remained as limp as a rag doll, slumped heavily on the floor with my head falling to one side.

The angry voices around us suddenly stopped, and someone murmured, "Something's not right. Why isn't she reacting at all?"

"Yeah. Even if she's faking it, she should've woken up after a kick like that, right?"

"Why is the kid's face so pale? Did something actually happen to her?"

Mom, who had been livid just moments ago, froze. She stared at my tightly shut eyes and bloodless face, and a flicker of panic crossed her expression.

Instinctively, she crouched down and reached out to check if I was breathing.

Just then, the soft, sweet voice of my AI companion sister, Nova, rang out.

"Don't worry, Mom."

A soft blue light flickered in her eyes as a holographic screen unfolded in front of her, flashing rows of dense data.

"My system indicates that Tina's vital signs are stable. She's just experiencing an elevated heart rate and fluctuating blood pressure, which perfectly match the physiological profile of a human telling a lie.

"She's pretending to be dead to gain sympathy and avoid punishment."

Mom immediately relaxed. She pulled her hand back, cast a look of pure disgust at my body on the ground, then patted Nova on the head.

"Thank goodness you're so sensible, Nova, unlike this ingrate. She's been a liar ever since she was a kid. Raising her has been a complete waste of my time."

Floating in front of them and looking at the scene, I felt cold all over.

It struck me that Nova had been lying all along! She should have been able to detect that my heart had stopped beating and that my vitals had long since disappeared. So why was she lying to Mom?

What was her motive? Wasn't she supposed to be just a cold robot?

The ride operator looked at me lying on the floor, then at the indifferent Mom, and hesitantly said, "This kid really doesn't look right to me, ma'am. Just to be safe, shouldn't we call an ambulance?"

"An ambulance for what?" Mom impatiently snapped, her expression darkening. "She's faking it! She's pulled this trick countless times!

"Every time she gets into trouble, she pretends to faint or play dead so that I'll feel sorry for her and forgive her. But I'm not humoring her bad habit today!"

"But—"

"No buts!" Mom cut him off.

She bent down, grabbed me by the arm, and roughly dragged me up from the floor.

My body felt completely weightless as she hauled it along. My shins scraped against the rough concrete, leaving a trail of dark red blood, but Mom didn't even spare it a glance.

She dragged me all the way to the parking lot, popped the trunk of her car, and threw me inside without hesitation.

"Children who lie don't deserve to sit in the car. You can stay in the trunk! Come on, Nova. We're going home."

With a loud bang, she slammed the trunk shut and took Nova's hand before walking toward the passenger seat.

"Yes, Mom," Nova answered obediently.

Just before getting into the car, she turned and glanced back at the trunk. An eerie red light flashed in her eyes.

After leaving Mom's dream, I returned to the Bridge of Happiness, where the Keeper looked at me and smiled gently."Go on, child. Step into the cycle of rebirth. You'll be safe, loved, and happy in your next life."I drank the tea and stepped through the gates of rebirth. A brilliant white light flashed before my eyes, and I instantly lost consciousness. When I resumed consciousness again, I found myself cradled in a warm, soft embrace. A gentle lullaby drifted into my ears, and a faint scent of milk lingered in the air.I opened my eyes to see a beautiful, kind face looking down at me with a smile. Her eyes were full of love and adoration."Look who's awake. Mommy's little angel."She was my new mom, a gentle, kind-hearted, ordinary woman whose entire world revolved around me.My new family was simple. There was just Mom, Dad, and me, which meant I was their only daughter. They didn't hold prestigious academic doctorates, nor did they come from an elite, high-society backgroun

At last, the court found Mom guilty of child abuse and negligent homicide. With multiple charges combined, she was sentenced to ten years in prison. On the day of the sentencing, she wore a standard prison uniform. Her hair had turned gray, her face was gaunt, and she was no longer the once-radiant, confident woman she used to be.When she heard the verdict, she stared blankly at the courtroom ceiling. Tears slid silently down her cheeks as she wouldn't stop murmuring, "I'm sorry, Tina… I'm so sorry…"She was escorted away by the bailiffs and transferred to prison to begin her long sentence. That icy prison would serve as the place where she would spend the rest of her life in regret.Once the legal aftermath was fully settled, Dad sold the house filled with painful memories and resigned from his stable job. Then, he gathered my ashes and left the city for good.He didn't want to stay in a place where I had suffered and died. Instead, he wanted to find somewhere quiet, warm, and b

After Dad gave his statement at the police station and signed the paperwork, he dragged his heavy steps back to an empty house.Everything in the house was exactly as he had left it.In my room, my clothes were neatly folded, my unfinished homework still sat on the desk, and the family portrait I had drawn was still taped to the wall. But the little girl who belonged in the room was never coming back. His heart was filled with endless grief and rage.If Mom hadn't trusted Nova so blindly and neglected me, and if Nova hadn't lied so maliciously, I wouldn't have died.Right then, Nova walked out of her bedroom and approached him with a sweet smile, just like she always did. "Now that Tina is gone, I'll be your only daughter, Dad. I'm smarter, more obedient than her, and far better than her in every way. I don't lie, I don't make Mom mad, and I'll stay by your side forever."Nova's voice was sickeningly sweet and calculative. She looked up, blinking her synthetic eyes, and manipulat

The air in the interrogation room at the police station felt so heavy that it was almost suffocating.Mom sat in the metal chair with handcuffs binding her wrists tightly. Her hair was a disheveled mess, and her gaze was hollow. The polished, confident scientist everyone knew was gone.A technician walked in with a report. His expression was grim as he slammed a file onto the table and snapped, "I suggest you take a good look at this diagnostic report, Mrs. Shepherd. The so-called perfect AI robot you created is nothing but a complete fraud from the very start!"Mom slowly raised her hand and stared at the pages blankly. As she read line after line of the brutal truth, her whole body began to shake. The report clearly stated that Nova's core life-monitoring system had been riddled with severe wiring and connectivity errors from the moment she was assembled. She had never been linked to my physical data, so she hadn't been able to detect any of my heartbeat, body temperature, blood

Just then, Mom's gaze landed on Nova, who stood quietly to the side.Like a drowning person grabbing onto a final lifeline, she frantically turned to Nova and yelled, "Tell them, Nova! You were linked to Tina's heart metrics this whole time, and she's never had a heart condition. She's always been healthy!"You're my most perfect creation, Nova. You'll never make a mistake, will you?"Upon receiving the command, Nova stepped forward to display a holographic screen and announce in a sweet voice, "Hello, everyone. I'm Tina's personal AI companion, Nova."Based on my scans, Tina's vital signs are stable, and all physiological indicators are within normal ranges. No illness was detected, so please don't worry."At her words, Mom's gaze turned dull and dead. She looked at my stiff, rotting body and remembered hearing the official diagnosis from the forensic examiner. But the AI companion she had poured her heart into creating, which she trusted 100%, was blatantly lying to her face.T
