Plus, you own the customer relationship.

Audiobooks are the next frontier if you can swing the upfront cost. ACX has royalty-share options with narrators so you don’t pay anything out of pocket, but you split the profits forever. I went with a hybrid model for my last one—paid a smaller fee upfront and kept a higher royalty. It’s a slow burn, but once you have a few titles in a series, the audio sales really start to compound. Bundling the ebook and audio for a discount through Amazon’s MatchBook thing can also boost overall units sold. Just don’t expect to get rich from one book; it’s a volume game where each title feeds the others.

Everyone talks about Amazon ads, but they’re a money pit if you don’t know what you’re doing. I found more success with simple reader group promotions on Facebook or discounted book runs through sites like BookBub. The goal is to get that initial surge of sales to boost your ranking, which then leads to organic visibility. It’s a bit of a casino, but when it hits, it works. Also, setting your ebook to permanently free for the first in a series is a brutal but effective strategy—you lose direct income on that title, but it funnels readers into your paid sequels. My conversion rate from the free book to book two is about 12%, which pays the bills.

Honestly, the biggest shift for me was learning it's not about one book, it's about building a system. Serializing a novel on a platform like Kindle Vella or Radish can bring in consistent cash as you write. Each episode earns you tokens, and if you hook readers, they'll keep coming back and spending to unlock chapters. It forces you to write with cliffhangers, which isn't my natural style, but the data shows it works.

Then you take that completed serial, polish it, and release it as a full ebook. Maybe even offer the serial readers a discount on the compiled version. After that, you can experiment with wide distribution through Draft2Digital or IngramSpark to get into libraries and brick-and-mortar stores, which is a different income stream entirely. The key is repackaging the same core work for different audiences and platforms. A reader on Radish might never browse Amazon, and vice versa.

Merchandise is a weird one. For my fantasy series, I sell maps and quote prints on Etsy. It's not a huge moneymaker, but it keeps the dedicated fans engaged and turns a story into a brand. The profit margin on a physical print is way higher than on a 99-cent ebook.
