Is A Bearded Dragon Puffed Up Normal During Brumation?

If you've noticed your bearded dragon puffing up during brumation, that's not automatically a catastrophe — but it's something I pay attention to. During brumation their metabolism slows way down, they sleep more, and they can react to disturbances differently. Puffing up can simply be a defensive display: a beard raised and slightly inflated when they feel exposed or cold. It can also be them trying to trap air near their body for warmth or to look bigger if something startled them in their hide.

That said, I always watch for the red flags. True worry signs are labored or noisy breathing, visible mucus at the nose or mouth, open-mouth breathing while resting, a hard, distended belly that doesn’t shift, or a refusal to drink at all accompanied by rapid weight loss. I keep a log during brumation — weekly weights, photos of the belly and beard, and notes on breathing and feces. In short: mild puffing or beard-darkening during brumation can be normal; persistent swelling, strange breathing, or sudden behavioral changes are not.
