Many of the free downloads on J-Novel Club are officially licensed. There are also many free novels on Novel Updates with links to fan translations. While not entirely free, Kindle Unlimited is a great subscription service that allows you to download hundreds of books, including things like ‘Midnight Pleasure: 30 Shades Of Short Steamy Stories’ – a very short, very steamy collection of 30 very short stories, perfect for a quick romantic read of little time investment.

After years of searching the web for places to download light novels, I’ve created a list of my favorite sources. My go-to for fan-translated novels is Novel Updates, which is a meta-site for listing translated novels, sorted by genre and popularity. There, I first read The Rising of the Shield Hero years before it became an anime series. For officially-licensed light novels, BookWalker is hands-down the best source for me, since they now have a global store, and the use of BookWalker points to buy novels with them is very cost-effective. I’ve built up a collection of 50+ novels on the site.

'Wuxiaworld' provides a large array of wonderful Chinese light novels like 'Coiling Dragon'. When they first launched their early translation system it was revolutionary, now some of the novels require a subscription, but I’ve come to realize that the translators deserve to be paid for their work. I enjoy reading Japanese light novels, as ‘J-Novel Club’ offers a prepub of many of them, and I can start reading from the latest translated chapter almost immediately.

Most aggregator sites have tons of stolen content and are chock-full of malware so be careful! Sites like Baka-Tsuki are much better for older fan translations. Some tech-savvy Discord servers share public domain works as EPUB files. Don’t forget that many public domain works can be borrowed for free through your local library and read using apps such as Libby to download e-books for temporary loan. Light novels are currently very popular and as such, obtaining them legally has gotten easier.

As someone who consumes a lot of fan-translated Asian light novels, I have a few go-to download sites for my fellow enthusiasts. Novel Updates is one of the biggest websites for finding fan-translated light novels. They update regularly and have a massive list of novels for you to browse. J-Novel Club is another site I check out frequently. They offer officially translated Asian light novels for purchase and the quality of formatting is high. There’s also a subscription model that allows for access to a constant stream of new releases. Finally, there’s Baka-Tsuki which has a huge list of older and some more obscure titles. Note that the quality of the translations and the completeness of the novels can vary greatly, so be careful what you download. I also try to support the official releases and check to make sure that the site we’re using to download from is legal before we start downloading.

To purchase English e-book editions, such as novels that are officially licensed, I tend to rely on 'BookWalker', which has a very easy-to-use app for reading downloaded novels on your iPad. There are occasional sales that are good for getting a large number of novels. There are also websites for Chinese novels such as 'Wuxiaworld' and 'Webnovel'. Again, much of the content is paywalled, but some novels can be read for free, which is great for people looking to get into reading Chinese novels. Just be aware that illegally downloading novels online hurts the creators and I recommend sticking to the aforementioned websites, even if they don't have all of the novels you want to read right away.

Below are some of the best download sites available today for novel downloaders. Most of these are completely legal, very accessible, and of high quality. I’ve chosen to add J-Novel Club to this list because of their excellent premium subscription to read novels before their official release for a very low price in addition to supporting the authors by paying the publishers to allow them to sell the novels. Novel Updates on the other hand aggregates download links to many of the reputable translation sites available for novel downloaders today. Be aware though that quality can vary greatly, so be sure to read any reviews available before downloading from any particular site. I try to avoid websites with too many ads and a questionable reputation (many have a bunch of pop-up ads, for example), but Baka-Tsuki is one of the many websites to check out for Japanese novels, even if the list of available novels is continually decreasing due to licensing issues.

In app form, there are great selections on ‘BookWalker’ and ‘Amazon Kindle’ which frequently offer bundle deals. With a large library of free and premium Chinese light novels, I highly recommend ‘Wuxiaworld’ as it features high quality translations, and even has a community-driven forum for users to discuss their favorite novels. For raw Japanese light novels, you can check out ‘Syosetu’ (which originally had all of the novels). However, be warned, these are in Japanese, so you won’t be able to read them unless you’re fluent in the language. Honey’s Anime is a great site to get recommendations off of, even though they do not host any light novel downloads themselves.

One more thing: many of the official publishers of light novels are on Twitter. If there’s a release going on, for example, they may post a link to download the novel for free for a limited time. In addition, on the website Smashwords you can find many indie novels. Download them only from official sources to support the translators and thus hopefully get more novels translated in the future.

I’d rather buy one quality volume from a proper source than download 10 subpar volumes from some nefarious website with terrible OCR scanning, missing illustrations, or abysmal formatting. Light novels are meant to be visually stunning, with lots of illustrations to help evoke the proper emotions during key moments. A single poor quality file can ruin an otherwise great story. Official sources, such as major eBook stores, download centers, and the like, provide high quality artwork that has been placed properly, proper formatting for items such as italics and side text, and top notch translations. These things are worth paying for. The “free” sites are a lottery and you usually end up with a losing ticket. Protect your reading experience.

Where can I find online free book download sites for light novels?

While there are limited legal means to download free light novels, many official publishers as well as J-Novel Club offer free preview chapters and even ad-supported reading. For free web novels, there are numerous platforms that host thousands of ongoing stories. For example, the series ‘Forbidden Taboos : Steamy dark stories’ is entirely available for free reading on one of the major web novel platforms as a direct serialization of the dark romance tales with complex moral characters. You can read it all for free in your browser without looking for downloads.
