I often look for this exact kind of thing and the one that consistently comes to mind is the 'Chronicles of Dorsa' trilogy by Eliza Andrews. It's a fantasy epic where the two female leads start in such different places and have to navigate a brutal world of war and court politics. Taly starts off a scrappy, impulsive peasant girl and slowly develops into a clever military strategist. The other main character, the princess, is initially defined by duty and coldness but learns vulnerability and genuine connection. Their growth isn't linear—they have massive backslides, make terrible decisions, and grapple with the trauma they both inflict and endure. The relationship builds so slowly over the three books, and their personal evolution is intrinsically tied to it.

It's the kind of series where by the final book, you can look back at who they were in chapter one and barely recognize them, but every step of the change feels earned. The story gives them the room and the narrative weight to develop into leaders and partners on their own terms, outside of just the romance plot. Gideon starts as a resentful, brawny prisoner obsessed with leaving, and Harrow is a self-flagellating genius hiding an ocean of secrets. Over the books, their identities and histories completely unravel and rebuild in ways that are shocking and profoundly sad and weirdly triumphant. The growth isn't clean or traditionally heroic—it's brutal, psychological, and deeply tied to a love that’s more cosmic obligation than romance. It’s some of the most original character work out there.
