I get my best escape reads from indie publishers. 'A Letter to the Luminous Deep' by Sylvie Cathrall is an epistolary fantasy told through letters and notes between scholars studying strange phenomena in a submerged world. The slow-burn mystery and the unique format make you feel like you’re piecing the world together yourself. It’s gentle, intelligent, and utterly transporting.
Honestly, my favorite escape this season has been a sci-fi novel called 'The Peacemaker' by K.A. Doore. It's set on a generation ship where society is rigidly structured, and the main character is a negotiator trying to prevent a civil war. The world inside the ship feels so vast and lived-in, with its own ecology and social rules. The political intrigue is sharp, but the heart of it is about connection and found family. It completely pulled me out of my own head for a solid weekend.
Haven't seen 'The Death I Gave Him' by Em X. Liu mentioned yet. It's a sci-fi retelling of Hamlet set in a remote research facility, centering on a grief-stricken son and an AI. The claustrophobic, high-tech setting is the star—you feel trapped in the sterile labs and surveillance systems with the characters. The tension is relentless. It’s not a comfortable escape, but you will absolutely forget your surroundings.

Does anyone else find they can’t get into a new world if the prose is too clunky? It just yanks me right out. I need an author with a distinct, compelling voice to really sell the escape. That’s why I loved 'The Vanished Birds' by Simon Jimenez. The writing is lyrical and effortless, weaving together multiple timelines and characters across space. The world feels lived-in through small, sensory details. The story is about time dilation, found family, and the cost of progress. The beauty of the language itself was the vehicle that carried me away.
I can’t recommend 'The Name of the Wind' by Patrick Rothfuss enough. It’s a masterpiece of storytelling, blending lyrical prose with a gripping tale of a legendary wizard’s rise. Another must-read is 'The Priory of the Orange Tree' by Samantha Shannon, a sprawling epic with dragons, queens, and world-ending prophecies. The world-building is so rich, you’ll forget it’s fiction.
For something lighter but equally enchanting, 'The House in the Cerulean Sea' by TJ Klune is a heartwarming story about found family and magic. If you prefer darker, grittier tales, 'The Blade Itself' by Joe Abercrombie is a brutal yet brilliant start to a series that redefines fantasy. And don’t miss 'The Fifth Season' by N.K. Jemisin, which blends fantasy and sci-fi in a way that’s utterly unique. Each of these books offers a escape into worlds that feel alive, perfect for summer reading.
Diving deep into a fictional world is one of my favorite things about reading, and for that, I can't recommend 'The Wheel of Time' series by Robert Jordan highly enough. Each book unfolds a vast tapestry of cultures, magic, and character development that keeps me coming back for more. I lose track of time as I get wrapped up in the epic quests and intricate plots. The world-building is so rich; it feels palpable, as if you could walk through the streets of Tar Valon or stand at the foot of Dragonmount. The relationships between characters are complex and relatable, making each hurdle they face feel weighty and impactful.
I still remember the intense journey of Rand al'Thor and his companions, how they grow and evolve as individuals while battling against the Dark One. The narrative shifts allow you to explore multiple perspectives, which I find absolutely invigorating. No matter how many times I read it, there’s always a new detail to appreciate or an insight to grasp. Plus, the intricate web of prophecies and timelines really winds itself into the core of the saga, making it feel like a living, breathing entity that captures my imagination.
If you're looking for an immersive experience that will both challenge and enthrall you, this series is an absolute must-read! Such a rewarding journey that just pulls you in, page after page!
