Don't sleep on dedicated forum archives and old sites for niche fandoms. If you're into 'Dragon Age', the Bioware Social Network archives (rest in peace) still host amazing character analyses and fic threads. For older JRPGs like 'Final Fantasy VII', you might find gems on LiveJournal communities or even Dreamwidth. They lack modern tagging, so discovery is rougher, but the writing often feels more deliberate, less driven by immediate kudos. It's a different experience altogether.

Back in the day I practically lived on FanFiction.net, but its interface feels ancient now. The tagging system is practically nonexistent, which makes finding good 'Persona 5' or 'Mass Effect' stories a real chore. You can still find some classics there, but the culture's shifted.
For newer fandoms, especially around live-service games like 'Genshin Impact' or 'Honkai: Star Rail', Archive of Our Own is unbeatable. The tag wrangling system is a lifesaver—you can filter for exactly the pairing and tropes you want, or exclude the ones you hate. The downside is that the sheer volume can be overwhelming, and some of the more experimental prose gets buried. I still check FF.net out of habit, but AO3 is where my tabs live now.
Sometimes I wish there was something as sleek as Royal Road but just for fanworks.

Honestly, I browse on Tumblr more than any dedicated site these days. Writers will post snippets and link to their full works on AO3, but the real-time reactions and asks create a different vibe. You get these little missing scenes and headcanons that never make it into a full fic. For stuff like 'Baldur's Gate 3', the tag is constantly moving.
It's terrible for archiving or reading long fics in one go, but for feeling plugged into a fandom's pulse, it's weirdly effective. The algorithm is a mess, though. You have to really curate your follow list to avoid spoilers or discourse.

I’m the heroine in an erotic story.
My specialty? Turning anything hot or cold into something steamy.
On the first day I landed in a horror game, the boss told everyone to choose how they wanted to die.
I smiled and said, “I’ll take shortness of breath, trembling legs, glazed eyes, and… pleasure so intense I die from it.”
Boss: “???”

I gravitate towards Archive of Our Own for most things—the tagging system is a lifesaver when you're hunting for specific tropes like Gamer fics. Wattpad's algorithm can be weirdly hit-or-miss, but sometimes it surfaces a real gem that hasn't gotten traction elsewhere. I'd say AO3 is your primary hunting ground, but don't sleep on FanFiction.net's massive archive for older stories; some of the foundational 'The Gamer' crossovers are still there.
Honestly, the 'best' platform depends on what flavor you're after. Want highly polished, edited works with complex tags? AO3. Prefer a more raw, community-comment-as-you-go vibe? Wattpad. For a huge back catalog, FF.net still has value, even if the interface feels a bit dated.
