From a writing craft angle, I think the best power development ties directly into the character’s backstory and personal journey. It’s not just ‘what cool thing can they do,’ but ‘why can they do this, and what does it cost them?’ I read a fic once where a Blade Dancer’s unique lightning-infused techniques stemmed from a childhood accident that left them physically frail, so they had to rely on speed and elemental fusion over brute strength. The power was a solution to a problem, not just a gift.
Authors who mine the rich lore—the Celestial Realm, the Dark Chi, the history of the Four Guardians—find seeds for unique powers that feel earned. It makes the world feel bigger when a character’s ability is a piece of its hidden history, rather than an external superpower slapped on top.

Blade and Soul’s source material is built on wuxia and martial arts fantasy, which gives authors a huge sandbox to play in. The established power systems—like the Hongmoon arts, the Dark Arts, or the different schools—are already pretty detailed, but the fun part is seeing how writers extrapolate from there.
I’ve read a lot where an author will take a minor character from, say, the Stratus Empire and invent a whole lineage of shadow techniques just for them, weaving it into the existing political conflicts. Others hybridize elements, like combining Lyn spiritualism with Kung Fu Master physicality to create something entirely new for an OC. The trick isn’t just making a power ‘stronger’; it’s making it feel culturally and personally rooted in that world’s logic.
My favorite fics are the ones where the unique power directly challenges the character’s morality or forces a trade-off, making the flashy moves actually matter to the plot.

Actually, I kinda disagree with the idea that you always need to invent something totally new. Some of the most memorable character powers I’ve seen in 'Blade and Soul' fanfiction are hyper-specialized applications of existing canon abilities. Like, a Force Master who can’t conjure massive tornadoes but has perfected microscopic ice threads for surgical healing or assassination. It’s a constraint that breeds creativity.
The author focuses on the precision and control, turning a common class into a unique signature. That feels more authentic to martial arts progression to me—mastering one tiny, overlooked aspect to an insane degree. It also avoids the power-creep issue where every OC has to be the next Hongmoon heir.

Mostly they just remix the anime and game skills. A Force Master with water instead of ice, an Assassin who uses sound waves. Sometimes it works if the writing’s good, but a lot feel samey. The unique ones dig into the martial philosophy behind a style, not just the elemental effect.
