Consider the medium. Is this a book best read in physical form, or is the audiobook legendary? For my list, I note which format is supposed to be superior. A dense, poetic novel goes on the physical list. A memoir read by the author, or a thriller with a full cast, goes on the audiobook list. Matching the book to its ideal format, based on community reviews, maximizes my enjoyment of every highly-rated pick.
I follow the chain of blurbs. I find one best-rated book I adored. I look at who wrote the glowing praise on the cover. Then I find the best-rated book by that author. Then I look at who blurbed that book. It's a web of mutual admiration among great writers. The resulting list feels personally curated by authors whose taste I already trust, rather than by a faceless algorithm or a general audience. It has a wonderfully coherent literary sensibility.
I read the negative reviews of a top-rated book first. Not the trollish ones, but the thoughtful 2 or 3-star reviews. If their criticisms sound like things that would bother me too ('the ending felt rushed,' 'the protagonist was passive'), I might pass. But if their complaints are about things I love ('the magic system wasn't explained enough,' 'too much philosophical digression'), I move it to the top of my list. It's a brilliant inversion of the recommendation engine.
Podcasts! I listen to book podcasts like 'What Should I Read Next?' or 'The Book Review' from The New York Times. When a host gets genuinely excited about a book—their voice changes, they stumble over words—I write it down. That organic, vocal enthusiasm is a better filter for me than any static number on a website. My list becomes a compilation of human recommendations from trusted curators.
I track down the 'best of' lists from other countries. The UK's BBC Culture list, Canada's CBC Books, Australia's The Guardian. They always have a few titles that didn't make a splash in the US but are brilliant. It instantly globalizes my reading list and introduces me to perspectives and stories I'd completely miss if I only looked at American media outlets. The ratings from their local readers are just as high, just from a different audience.

Content Warning ️
Carnal temptations is extremely spicy and intended for mature audiences only. It contains graphic adult content, intense taboo relationships, power play, dubious consent, and morally gray characters. Reader discretion is strongly advised.
In this dripping-wet collection of forbidden steamy tales,a rebellious college brat gets exactly what she deserves in the first tale, bent over her desk, stretched and pounded senseless while he teaches her the real meaning of discipline.
From there, every fantasy turns darker and nastier.
Spoiled royals claim their defiant knights and maids on thrones and palace floors, claiming throats raw under crown and silk.
Best friends cross every line in sweaty, drenched threesomes.
CEOs wreck their secretaries over conference tables, while twisted Doms bind, flog, choke, and claim their willing (and unwilling) subs until they reach climax and scream.
This is not romance.
This is pure, primal, taboo-shattering filth, where power, lust, and obsession collide in the wettest, most depraved ways possible.
Welcome to Carnal temptations…Open it. Spread your legs.
And let yourself be completely ruined.

I maintain two lists: 'The Pillars' (high-rated, culturally significant books I feel I should read) and 'The Playground' (weird, mid-rated, intriguing books). The community rating helps me fill the first list efficiently. The second list is built from random encounters, intriguing covers, and author names I've heard in passing. This keeps reading from becoming a chore.
Why limit it to yearly? My club rotates theme months, and we let whoever hosts that month pick the romance sub-genre. February is obviously for contemporary, but August was 'historical heatwave,' and someone picked a pirate romance that was absolutely bonkers in the best way.
The key is variety and veto power. We have a shared Google Sheet where everyone drops a few dream titles, then we vote. The rule is you can't just add Sarah J. Maas or Colleen Hoover every time; you have to dig up something new or an underrated author. It forces discovery.
We also slot in one 'wild card' quarter where we read a romance-adjacent book, like a romantic fantasy or a mystery with a strong romantic subplot. Keeps the palate fresh and the discussions from getting repetitive.
