Okay, so I saw this question pop up and had to check my own account because I literally just tried this last week. The short answer is yes, but it’s not as straightforward as you’d hope. You can’t just go to Amazon, pick a Kindle book, and select ‘Pay with gift card balance’ at checkout. It defaults to your primary payment method.
What you have to do is set your gift card balance as the ‘1-Click payment method’ in your Kindle settings. It’s buried a bit: go to ‘Manage Your Content and Devices’ on Amazon, then ‘Preferences’, and look for ‘Digital Payment Settings’. Change the 1-Click setting to your gift card balance. After that, any 1-Click purchase for a Kindle book should pull from the gift card first.
It works, but it’s a little annoying it’s not a simple toggle at checkout like with physical goods. I bought a couple of the daily deals this way. Just remember to switch it back if you don’t want your whole balance drained on impulse buys.

Absolutely you can, but it requires a specific setup that isn't immediately obvious. The key is configuring your 1-Click payment method to prioritize your gift card balance. This is managed through your Amazon digital payment settings, not the regular checkout flow. It’s a bit of a legacy system quirk, I think, because digital and physical purchases used to be on different backend systems. Once set, it works flawlessly for individual ebook purchases. Do note that this method typically won’t cover recurring charges like Kindle Unlimited subscriptions—those usually need a direct card or bank account. So it’s perfect for buying titles outright, especially catching those limited-time sales.

Honestly, I was so frustrated the first time I tried this. I had a $50 gift card and figured I’d load up on some ebooks. Went to buy one, and it charged my credit card instead. No option to choose. Did some digging on forums and found the workaround. It feels like Amazon kinda hides this feature, maybe because they’d rather have your card on file for subscriptions? But yeah, it’s totally possible. Just a weird account setting you have to change first. Once you do, it’s seamless. Spent my whole balance on the next three books in a series I was hooked on.

Yes, but you have to set your gift card as the default 1-Click payment method for digital content. It's in the account settings under 'Digital Payment Settings'. After that, buying any Kindle book with 1-Click uses the balance. Simple once you know, but not intuitive. I used mine to grab a few classics that were on sale for a couple bucks each.

Dumped a week before Christmas, Annabelle “Belle” Evans forfeits her plan to spend Christmas with her narcissistic boyfriend in New York, and agrees to travel back home to Big Bear Lake with her perfect model sister and her nerdy brother-in-law.
But a funny Christmas wish has other plans for her.
When their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, Belle wanders off for help and finds herself cornered by a wolf in the snowy woods. He saves her life… and then claims her as his.
He takes her to his secluded cabin deep in the woods, refusing to let her leave until she’s “healed.” But the way his hands linger on her skin, the way he looks at her curves like she’s a meal he needs to taste, Belle starts to realize the wound he really wants to tend to is the one between her thighs.
He’s dangerous. He’s dominant. He’s sexy.
He’s everything she wished for when she jokingly wrote to Santa for a “hot werewolf boyfriend.”

I love using gift cards to buy books on my Kindle because it feels like treating myself without worrying about my bank account. Here's how I do it: First, I make sure my Amazon account is linked to my Kindle device. Then, I redeem the gift card by entering the code in the 'Redeem a Gift Card' section under 'Your Account'. Once the balance is added, I browse the Kindle store on my device or the Amazon website. When I find a book I want, I click 'Buy now with 1-Click', and the payment is automatically deducted from my gift card balance. If the book costs more than my balance, I can choose to pay the difference with another payment method. It's super easy and convenient, especially when I want to splurge on a new series or author.
I can walk you through the process of buying books with a gift card. The first thing you need to do is make sure your gift card balance is added to your Amazon account. Open the Amazon website or app, go to 'Your Account,' then 'Gift cards,' and click 'Redeem a Gift Card.' Enter the code, and the amount will be added to your account.
Once the balance is there, open the Kindle app on your device. Search for the book you want and click 'Buy now.' At checkout, your gift card balance will automatically be applied if it covers the full amount. If not, you can choose to pay the remaining balance with another payment method. It’s a seamless process, and I’ve found it super convenient for managing my book purchases without needing a credit card linked.
