Skip the big names. Find 'Midnight Doorways: Fables from Pakistan' by Usman T. Malik. The story 'The Vaporization Enthalpy of a Peculiar Pakistani Family' is a masterclass in quiet, existential horror rooted in place and history. It’s short, but the imagery of loss and disintegration haunted me for days. Sometimes the most chilling thing isn’t a monster, but the slow fade of everything you know.

Honestly, I find a lot of modern horror too… polished. The ones that really get me are the slow, literary kind where the horror is almost a background character. 'Our Wives Under the Sea' by Julia Armfield from a couple years back is a perfect example—the dread is so quiet and beautiful it’s paralyzing. It’s about a marine biologist who returns from a deep-sea mission changed, and her wife watching her slowly unravel. The chill is in the domestic details, the silence between them.
For a more classic feel but recent, 'Black River Orchard' by Chuck Wendig is a sprawling folk horror about a town obsessed with magic apples. The creeping wrongness builds page by page, and the ensemble cast makes the corruption feel inevitable. It’s not about one monster, but a whole community choosing rot. That’s scarier to me.

Last year I became convinced the most effective horror migrates from external threats to internal ones. I re-read 'The Haunting of Hill House' and noticed how much the terror lives in Eleanor's longing, not the house's groans. So this year, 'Whalefall' by Daniel Kraus chilled me—it’s not just a man vs. giant squid survival tale. The real horror is the emotional claustrophobia, the protagonist trapped both in a whale’s stomach and in the memory of his father.
For something newer, 'Looking Glass Sound' by Catriona Ward messed with my sense of reality more than any straightforward ghost story. It’s about a writer whose childhood summer memoir is stolen, and the narrative layers peel back like a nightmare you can’t wake from. The chill comes from the theft of your own past, your own story. It left me staring at the ceiling.
A dark horse is 'A Short Stay in Hell' by Steven L. Peck. It’s a philosophical horror novella about being trapped in a library universe where you must find your life’s story among infinite shelves. The concept of infinite time and near-zero odds is a quiet, profound dread that sticks for weeks.

Don’t sleep on 'Lone Women' by Victor LaValle if you haven’t yet. It’s a historical horror western about a Black woman homesteading in 1915 Montana with a locked trunk. The isolation of the setting does half the work. The supernatural element is brutal, but the human prejudice she faces is just as terrifying. It’s a different kind of chill—less jump-scare, more the slow realization of how monstrous people can be when they’re scared of what they don’t understand.
I’ll also throw in 'How to Sell a Haunted House' by Grady Hendrix. Yeah, his stuff can be campy, but the puppets in this one? They got under my skin in a way I didn’t expect. It uses family trauma and inherited guilt as the vehicle, and the absurdity somehow makes the scary parts feel more real and personal. It’s a sneaky kind of chilling.

Let's talk about 'Mexican Gothic' by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Yes, it's a gothic romp, but the core horror is profoundly psychological. It involves a specific, creepy form of mental invasion and persuasion, a hive-mind toxicity that seeks to absorb and erase individual will. The protagonist, Noemí, has to fight not just for her physical survival but for the sovereignty of her own mind. The chill is in the seductive, languid atmosphere that tries to lull both her and the reader into submission. It's a fantastic update of gothic tropes with a sharp psychological edge.
