Honestly, the only wrong way to do it is to start with the later co-authored books after Clancy's passing. Stuff like 'Command Authority'. Those assume you know decades of lore and characters. They're for fans who just want more of the universe, not new readers. Starting there would be like starting 'One Piece' at chapter 900. Any of the core Clancy-written novels are safer starting points, even out of order.

A hidden gem is the audiobook of 'The Hunt for Red October' narrated by Frank Muller. It's a different performance than the more common Prichard version. Muller's character voices are incredible. If you're going the audio route, seek that one out. For order, it doesn't matter as much when you're listening—you can always pause and jump to an earlier book if you get confused. The audio format is more forgiving of non-linear exploration than reading physical books.

The man wrote massive tomes. Don't make it homework. Go to a used bookstore, pick the one with the coolest or most absurd title ('The Teeth of the Tiger'? Amazing), and start there. If the 800 pages of technical detail fly by, you're a Clancy person. Then you can go back and read the 'important' ones. If you find it a slog, you saved yourself from buying a whole shelf of similar doorstops. Life's too short for prescribed reading orders on entertainment.

The video game 'The Hunt for the Red October' on NES was my introduction. That's my chronological starting point. Good luck fitting that into your spreadsheets, everyone.

I tried to get into the books but couldn't get past the lengthy descriptions of military hardware. The movies cut that down to the cool visuals. For me, the order is: 1. 'The Hunt for Red October' (movie), 2. 'Patriot Games' (movie), 3. 'Clear and Present Danger' (movie). Stop there. That's the perfect, tight trilogy with a satisfying arc. 'Sum of All Fears' is a decent reboot but non-essential. The show is a separate modern thing. The later books and films just rehash the same 'Ryan saves the world' plot on a bigger scale.

Jack Saunders wanted one last hurrah before taking the mantle of DS Oil & Gas, the billion-dollar company that his father founded. He brought his secretary, Brandy, hoping that he could kindle a relationship that would last through the long days and nights of running a company. However, while the party was great, the gold digging woman he brought was not, and Jack resigned himself to a lifetime of loneliness.
That was until he took a walk down the beach and met her. A woman who didn’t recognize him from the tabloids and only saw him, the man behind the money.
