Honestly, a lot of these plots lean on external conflict—the scandal, the angry parents, the disapproving colleague. For me, the more interesting friction is internal. The teacher's guilt is a huge one. Are they exploiting a position of trust? Even if the student is the pursuer, that doubt should haunt them. Does the attraction stem from a need to feel powerful or admired in a way their adult life lacks?

The student's conflict is often about defining themselves outside of that dynamic. If the relationship ends, do they feel their entire identity was wrapped up in being 'the teacher's lover'? Stories that skip this psychological mess for pure wish-fulfillment feel shallow to me. The best ones make you sit with the discomfort.

Man, the power imbalance itself is a whole buffet of conflict. You've got the institutional ethics hanging over them like a sword—getting caught means someone's career is over, usually the teacher's. The secrecy becomes its own prison; they can't hold hands on campus, can't talk about their weekend, live in constant fear of a student overhearing something. That paranoia eats away at the 'normal' relationship stuff.

Then there's the maturity gap, which smart stories really dig into. It's not just age, it's life experience. The teacher might be jaded, carrying baggage from a past divorce or failed ambitions, while the student is all raw, intense first-love idealism. That clash of perspectives creates so many misunderstandings. The student might see a grand romantic gesture where the teacher sees a catastrophic risk. I'm always more invested when the story leans into that unease rather than just glossing over it for the steam.

External pressure is the obvious engine, but I think the quietest, nastiest conflict is the inevitable end of the semester. What happens when they're no longer teacher and student? The entire foundation of how they met and the forbidden tension that defined them just... vanishes. Does the relationship have anything left without that structure? That transition period, figuring out if there's a real connection or just a shared secret, fascinates me more than the initial getting-together drama.
