Man, I feel like the 'redeemed villain husband' is its own cottage industry now. The most common path I see is the 'self-sacrificing protector.' He starts off terrible, maybe a tyrant or a cold strategist who married the heroine for power. Then, through witnessing her genuine spirit or her suffering, he starts doing small, secret things to protect her from the real threats—his own family, a rival nation, whatever. The redemption isn't in a grand speech, but in him quietly taking a poisoned arrow meant for her, or dismantling his own network of spies to keep her safe. It works because it shows change through action, not words. His past cruelty often becomes a tool for her benefit, which is a neat narrative flip.
A trickier but compelling variant is the 'educated by loss' arc. He doesn't get better until his villainy costs him the one thing he genuinely came to value—her trust, her presence, sometimes even her life (temporarily, of course). The story then becomes about him painfully learning empathy and rebuilding something from ashes, often while she's rightfully wary. It's messier and requires the heroine to have a strong backbone, not just forgive him because he's sad now. The redemption feels earned because the consequence was real.

Not every villain needs a full redemption. Some of the best husband dynamics are about negotiation, not reform. They establish a bloody, mutually beneficial partnership. He stays a villain, she's no angel either, and their 'redemption' is just building a fragile, functional trust between two dangerous people. It's less about him becoming good and more about him becoming hers. That shift in allegiance is the entire arc, and it's often way more satisfying than a personality overhaul.

I'm actually a bit tired of the 'traumatic backstory explains everything' template. Oh, his court mage tortured him as a child? His father was a monster? Feels like a shortcut sometimes. A more interesting common arc, in my opinion, is the 'pragmatist turned believer.' He married her for a cynical, political reason. His redemption is less about becoming a 'good person' and more about his cold calculus gradually including her well-being as a primary variable. He might still be ruthless to others, but his loyalty to her becomes absolute and his methods shift to protect her ideals. He's not suddenly a sweetheart; he's a sharp blade that now points only at her enemies.
This works well in historical or political settings where sudden personality transplants are jarring. The change is in his priorities, not his core personality. The fun for the reader is spotting the moment his strategic reports start including notes on her favorite flowers, or when he executes a rival for insulting her, not just for posing a threat. The romance is in the deviation from his own code.
