Think of it like a TV series. Seasons 1-3 are the main story (the trilogy). Then you get a spin-off series focusing on other characters (the duology). You wouldn't watch the spin-off before finishing the original show, because it contains spoilers and callbacks. Same principle applies here. The duology explores the brothers' lives and new games, but it builds on established dynamics and resolved plot points from the initial three-book run.

From a fan's perspective, reading order is sacred. The shipping dynamics alone! The will-they-won't-they tensions that develop across the trilogy would be completely undercut if you read the later books first. You'd know who ends up with whom, or what familial secrets come out, which ruins the slow-burn romance and the shocking family revelations. For the full emotional rollercoaster, you have to experience the story as it was released.

I borrowed 'The Hawthorne Legacy' from a friend first by accident. Big mistake. The first chapter recap helped a little, but I was constantly missing the nuance of relationships and the weight of previous reveals. I went back and read 'The Inheritance Games' and it all clicked. The series is too intricately plotted to read out of order. The recap chapters are not substitutes for the actual journey.

My two cents: the 'correct' order is whatever gets you reading. But if you care about plot, suspense, and character development, then publication order is objectively better. It's the order in which the author conceived and revealed the story. Every clue, red herring, and romantic moment is paced for that specific sequence.

For seventeen years, I believed I was nothing, Iris Delta, the unwanted orphan tolerated by a pack that saw me as a burden. The Maxwell quad Alpha heirs made sure I knew my place, tormenting me with cruel words and vicious pranks. I was weak, worthless, invisible.
I was wrong about everything.
On my eighteenth birthday, Alpha Maxwell reveals the truth that changes everything: I'm Seraphina Blackthorne, the last heir of a bloodline thought extinct. My parents didn't abandon me—they were murdered by the Northern Alliance, who believed they'd eliminated every trace of Blackthorne power.
They were wrong, too.
The moment my wolf Diamond awakens, the mate bond snaps into place with the four men who made my life hell. Fin, Brent, Kane, and Liam—my tormentors are my fated mates, four pieces of one soul that can only be completed by me. Their cruelty wasn't hatred; it was a fractured soul recognising its missing piece and lashing out in fear.
But the Northern Alliance isn't finished. They've come to eliminate the last Blackthorne before I can claim my birthright. What they don't realise is that I'm not just the last heir, I'm the strongest Blackthorne born in three centuries.
When divine justice flows through my veins and ghostly wolf spirits answer my call, they'll learn what happens when you try to destroy something the goddess herself has chosen to protect.
The Blackthorne line has returned. And this time, we're not going down without a fight.

I lost my family.
Now I’m lost.

I was so very, very wrong.

And he still needed to grieve the death of his parents.
Kellen wakes up to find himself on a boat, going to Goddess knows where and the last thing he remembers is saying goodbye to Lamia and heading home with Mike.
When he finds himself in a strange land, sold to a bloody thirsty Alpha and his deranged Luna, for their packs entertainment, his title, means nothing. A man who cares only for three things; the games, the money, and blood; the more shed the better.
While Lamia and Mike search for him on the wrong continent Kellen is thrust into the Gladiator games. Kellen fights for his survival and the lives of many, including one beautiful girl who has captured his heart and has been promised to another as their chosen mate.
Can Kellen survive the Gladiator games when the odds are stacked against him, save the people and claim the mate the moon goddess promised him?
**This is book 3 in The Delta's Daughter series**
Five years ago, Seraphina Vale’s life ended in front of a crowd.
On her wedding day to billionaire CEO Cassian Thorne, she was publicly accused of corporate espionage, betrayal, and greed. Security dragged her out of the ceremony as cameras flashed and the media tore her reputation apart.
The man she loved never gave her a chance to explain.
What Cassian never knew was that Seraphina walked away carrying his child.
Now, five years later, Seraphina has rebuilt her life from nothing. Stronger. Independent. Untouchable.
But when fate brings her back into Cassian’s world, a shocking truth surfaces her son, Lucien, is the only biological heir to the powerful Thorne empire.
The Thorne family demands the child.
Seraphina refuses.
The only solution Cassian offers is a contract:
Live under his roof.
Pretend to be his wife.
Secure the heir’s future.
But the past is full of lies, enemies are still watching, and the truth behind Seraphina’s downfall is far darker than either of them imagined.
This time, the woman he once destroyed isn’t coming back to beg.
She’s coming back to win.
Pledged by birth to ancient obligations he barely understands, the unnamed heir grapples with a destiny that demands secrecy and sacrifice. Cloaked in shadows within his ancestral keep, he learns to read arcane symbols whispered through generations. When political machinations from the gilded twilight city threaten to expose his lineage—and his potential—he must navigate deception and hidden loyalties to claim what is rightfully his. Guided by a devoted guardian, and haunted by the weight of prophecy, he must choose whether to embrace the power he fears or shatter the silence that has long protected him.
After the death of her estranged grandmother, Ayla inherits a crumbling estate—and a ring etched with runes she can’t read. But the moment she slips it on, the barrier between the mortal world and the realm of night cracks.
Enter Lucien, a vampire noble exiled for treason, bound by oath to protect the bloodline that nearly wiped out his own. And Ayla? She’s the last of that bloodline—and possibly the key to restoring or destroying his dying realm.
Ayla doesn't want anything to do with vampires, ancient wars, or cursed magic. But when hunters come for her, and she starts hearing voices in her sleep, Lucien becomes her only protection—and possibly her greatest threat.
She came back to New York to sign a few papers and disappear again.
Instead, Elara Monroe walked straight into the war her mother started twenty-four years ago.
Cassian Vale has been watching her for months, the last living heir to the woman who burned his family’s empire to ash. Revenge was supposed to be simple until he touched her and realized the fire in her blood felt like home.
Now she’s caught between two brothers who should hate her:
Cassian, the ruthless billionaire who wants her heart even more than he once wanted her ruin, and Adrian, the ex who left her once and will spend the rest of his life trying to earn her back.
But the real danger isn’t the men who love her.
It’s the uncle who once decided her mother belonged to him and who has waited decades to claim the daughter Victoria died protecting.
Some legacies are written in money and power.
This one is written in blood, secrets, and the kind of love that survives everything even the truth.
I'm only on the second book, so maybe I shouldn't even be in this thread. Too late now! I'm avoiding spoilers, but from what I gather, there's more after the third book? Good to know. I'm just taking them one at a time as my library hold list delivers them. Seems to be working fine so far.
Publication order is key, but also consider the format. The trilogy is a complete puzzle. The newer books are like opening a new puzzle box with some of the same pieces but a different picture on the lid. 'The Brothers Hawthorne' requires knowledge of the family dynamics established in the first three books to really hit home.
Jumping around would dilute the impact of the character arcs, especially Grayson's. Read them as they were released.
The perfect way to think about it is as two connected series. Series A: The Inheritance Games Trilogy. Series B: The Hawthorne Brothers Duology. You must complete Series A before starting Series B. There's no overlap or alternative starting points.
I think a lot of people get tripped up because 'The Brothers Hawthorne' has a different protagonist. But it's still a direct sequel in terms of timeline. Read the Avery trilogy first to understand the Hawthorne family, the mansion, and all the games. Then the brother-focused books will hit much harder because you'll already care about them.
I can confidently say the order matters to fully appreciate the twists and layered mysteries. Start with 'The Inheritance Games', the first book where Avery Grambs gets thrown into a billionaire's deadly game. The sequel, 'The Hawthorne Legacy', dives deeper into the family secrets and ramps up the stakes.
Then comes 'The Final Gambit', which wraps up the trilogy with explosive revelations and emotional payoffs. Reading out of order would spoil key plot points, like the true nature of the Hawthorne family's obsession with puzzles. The series is a rollercoaster of riddles, romance, and betrayal, so savor each book chronologically to experience the clues unfolding naturally.
The plot is like a domino chain. Book one tips the first domino, and they keep falling through book three. 'The Brothers Hawthorne' picks up a few dominoes that were set up but didn't fall in the initial chain. You need to see the initial cascade to appreciate the new ones.
