Wait, is there any new prequel content out? I haven't checked in a while. Last I knew, it was just book one, 'Close to Home'. Has Cara Hunter released any e-shorts or anything set before that first case? If not, then the order is pretty locked in.

Check your edition carefully, as title changes can cause confusion. The first DI Fawley novel is titled 'Close to Home' in most markets. I've heard rumors of it being retitled for some releases, but the core story is the same. Once you have that, you're golden. Read it, then move right along to 'In the Dark'.
The connection between the books isn't a cliffhanger, but there's a clear sense of time passing and characters evolving. You'll pick up on little references and changed relationships if you go in order.

Think of it this way: 'Close to Home' establishes the status quo. 'In the Dark' disrupts it. To feel the full impact of that disruption, you need to know what the status quo was. The relationships within the investigative team, the public perception of the police after the first case, Fawley's personal life—all of it is setup in book one.
Reading them out of order would lessen the tension in certain scenes of 'In the Dark' where those established norms are challenged or broken.

Honestly, the obsession with 'correct' order can be overblown for crime series like this. 'In the Dark' works perfectly fine on its own. The mystery is contained, and any backstory you need is explained. But... if you're asking for the chronological order of the series, then yes, 'Close to Home' is the first story featuring DI Adam Fawley.
Reading it first will give you deeper context for the protagonist's mindset and his team's quirks. So, while not mandatory, it's the recommended path for maximum immersion and payoff.

I'm always surprised when people try to make reading orders more complicated than they are. For this series, it's straightforward: begin with 'Close to Home'. That novel introduces DI Adam Fawley, his team, and his personal burdens. 'In the Dark' is the immediate follow-up.
There's no benefit to jumping around. The series is designed to be consumed in publication order. You could theoretically read them out of sequence, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice by unraveling the character progression the author carefully plotted.

You'll be fine on the plot. The central mystery is completely self-contained and brilliantly paced. Where you might feel a slight disconnect is with the secondary character, Erica Somer. Her story is a direct continuation from book one. It adds a layer of tension, but the main plot doesn't rely on you knowing her full history to be shocking or satisfying.
The emotional cost of the job is a series-long ledger. By 'In the Dark,' you can see the toll adding up on Fawley and his team. They're more competent but also more scarred. This isn't a series where the detective resets to zero after each case. The baggage accumulates, and that continuity of emotional consequence is one of the most powerful and realistic connections between the novels.
