Don't overcomplicate it. Read them in publication order: Ember, Torch, Reaper, Sky. The novellas aren't essential to the main plot's resolution. The graphic novel is a standalone thing, and the short story is a nice character piece but not mandatory. If you're a completionist, slot the Elias short story in after book two. Honestly, the series shifts focus a lot by the third book, so just following Laia and Elias's journey in the order Sabaa Tahir wrote it is the way to go.

Publication order works perfectly. I read them back-to-back as they came out, years apart, and that waiting gave each book's impact time to settle. The core sequence is solid on its own. You won't be lost just sticking to the four novels.

I'd argue the only must-read outside the main four is 'A Spark of White Fire'. It's a crucial emotional bridge for Elias, explaining his headspace going into 'A Reaper at the Gates'. Without it, his choices in that book feel a bit more abrupt. So my preferred order is: 1. 'An Ember in the Ashes'. 2. 'A Torch Against the Night'. 3. 'A Spark of White Fire' (the short story). 4. 'A Reaper at the Gates'. 5. 'A Sky Beyond the Storm'. The graphic novel prequel can be read anytime, even after everything, as a bit of extra flavor about the Academy's brutality.

I actually messed this up on my first read and jumped into the third book by mistake, which was a confusing disaster. The correct order is pretty straightforward: 'An Ember in the Ashes', then 'A Torch Against the Night', 'A Reaper at the Gates', and finally 'A Sky Beyond the Storm'. That's the core quartet.

There are also a couple of novellas. 'A Thief Among the Trees' is a graphic novel prequel about the Blackcliff students, and it's fine but skippable. The more important one is 'A Spark of White Fire', a short story from Elias's perspective set between the second and third books; it's in some special editions. I'd recommend reading that one after 'A Torch Against the Night' for a smoother flow. After finishing the main series, there's a new book, 'The Ember Quartet Companion', which has extra scenes and commentary, but that's strictly for superfans who want to linger in the world a bit longer.

What is the reading order for 'From Blood and Ash' series?

For 'From Blood and Ash', start with the main series in order: 'From Blood and Ash' (book 1), 'A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire' (book 2), 'The Crown of Gilded Bones' (book 3), and 'The War of Two Queens' (book 4). There’s also a prequel series, 'Flesh and Fire', which you can read either after book 3 or book 4. Some fans prefer diving into the prequel after book 2 for extra lore, but it’s designed to be standalone enough to fit anywhere. The spin-offs enrich the world but aren’t mandatory. If you love political intrigue and slow-burn romance, stick to the main books first. The prequels explore ancient vampire history and are darker in tone.

What is the order of the Ember series books?

the book that introduces us to the dying underground city and the brave kids, Lina and Doon, who are determined to save it. Next is 'The People of Sparks', which follows their journey above ground and the challenges of starting anew. The third book, 'The Prophet of Yonwood', is a prequel set before Ember’s founding, adding depth to the world. Finally, 'The Diamond of Darkhold' wraps up the series with Lina and Doon returning to Ember for one last adventure. Each book builds on the last, creating a rich, immersive experience that’s hard to put down.

What is the reading order for From Ashes To Flames series?

I've put together a clear roadmap that I’d recommend for anyone jumping into 'From Ashes To Flames' — I usually tell people to follow publication order unless you specifically want the in-universe timeline first. Start with the original novel, 'From Ashes To Flames' (the book that kicked the series off). After that, read the direct sequels in the order they were released; the narrative and the character development are arranged so that publication order preserves reveals, emotional beats, and worldbuilding reveals the way the author intended. After the core novels, slot in any officially released novellas or short stories where they were published. Often those pieces are released between full novels or as bonus content in special editions; reading them after the book that came before them in publication order avoids accidental spoilers and gives context for minor characters. If there's an omnibus or a revised edition that collects the main novels plus bonus material, that can be a neat way to binge, but be mindful that some omnibus releases re-order extras in a way that isn’t chronological. If you like to read strictly by in-world chronology, look for a prequel novella or short piece and put that before book one — but know that doing so may dilute certain reveals. Personally I prefer publication order for first time reads and then a chronological re-read later to catch world details I missed. It keeps the mystery brisk and the emotional arcs intact, which is why I enjoyed it so much on my first run through.
