What Is The Correct Reading Order For Erich Segal’S Love Story Novels?
Big fan of the classic movie and now checking out Erich Segal's book series. The sequel titles are confusing me—does 'Oliver's Story' come before or after the original 'Love Story'?

Most people only know the original 'Love Story', but there are actually two sequels. The order is the 1970 novel 'Love Story', followed by 'Oliver's Story' from 1977, and then a much later sequel called 'The Class' from 1985 which features some of the same characters in a broader Harvard setting.
It's a pretty straightforward trilogy, though the tone shifts quite a bit after the first one.

They're products of their time, especially in how they handle gender roles and class. Reading them in order shows a slight evolution in Segal's thinking, or at least in the societal norms he was reflecting. It's a fascinating time capsule beyond the love story itself.

My ranking would be: 1. 'Love Story', 2. 'The Class', 3. 'Oliver's Story'. But for reading order, you still have to go 1, 3, 2 to understand the references in 'The Class'. My personal preference doesn't change the necessary sequence.

The simplicity of the first book is its strength. By adding sequels, Segal risked undoing that. Whether he succeeded is up to the reader. But to judge for yourself, you have to read them in sequence. There's no other way to form a complete opinion on the series as a whole.

Check out the Open Library website. You can sometimes see scanned copies of different editions, including the front matter. I did a quick look and saw a 2005 edition that had several pages of 'P.S. Insights, Interviews & More...' at the back, which is a HarperCollins series that includes author interviews, reading guides, and other snippets. That's definitely a version with bonus content.
