Okay, so the main sequence is straightforward: the seven books numbered in their titles. Where it gets tricky is the supplementary material. The 'Lost Files' novellas are like DVD extras; they're not mandatory, but they enrich the experience. I'd slot them in publication order between the main novels.
What nobody warned me about was the 'Generation One' book. That's actually the start of a sequel series, 'Lorien Legacies Reborn'. You absolutely must finish the original seven-book arc with 'United as One' before touching that. I made the mistake of thinking it was book eight and was utterly lost for a few chapters. The tone shifts, the cast is new, and it assumes you know how the original war ended.
Main books first, in numbered order. The novellas are optional but fun for extra context. Just don't jump into 'Generation One' until you've finished the core seven. It's a separate storyline set after the main events.
I was so confused when I first jumped into this series because of all the different books floating around. The core is the seven main 'I Am Number Four' books: 'I Am Number Four', 'The Power of Six', 'The Rise of Nine', 'The Fall of Five', 'The Revenge of Seven', 'The Fate of Ten', and 'United as One'. That's the essential spine.
But then there are the 'Lost Files' novellas, which are collections of short stories originally released as ebooks. They add backstory for characters like Six, Nine, and Adam. You can read them after the main book they're connected to, or save them all for after the series. I read them alongside and liked the extra depth.
Honestly, the spin-off series 'Lorien Legacies Reborn' follows a new generation, so definitely save that for after 'United as One'. The reading order gets messy if you try to mix those in too early.
The publishing order is your safest bet. Start with 'I Am Number Four', then just go down the line: 'The Power of Six', 'The Rise of Nine', etc., all the way to 'United as One'. The novella collections—'The Lost Files: Six's Legacy', 'Nine's Legacy', and so on—fit in roughly where they were released. For instance, read the first 'Lost Files' after book two.
Some people say you can skip the novellas and still follow the plot, which is mostly true, but they flesh out the world. Adam's story in particular becomes pretty crucial to the later books, so I'd recommend at least checking those out.

A/N
This was my First Trilogy and might have some Grammar issues. I will re-edit when I can.
I picked up 'I Am Number Four' years ago on a whim at a used bookstore and got completely hooked, so figuring out the order was my first big deep dive. The main series is straightforward: 'I Am Number Four', 'The Power of Six', 'The Rise of Nine', 'The Fall of Five', 'The Revenge of Seven', 'The Fate of Ten', and 'United as One'. That's the core nine-book arc following the Garde. But if you just stop there, you'll miss a ton. There are these side 'Lost Files' novella collections that slot in between the novels. They follow other characters like Six, Adam, and some of the Mogadorians, and they fill in backstory and parallel events. I'd honestly recommend reading them in publication order; they add a lot of texture to the world.
Once you're through the main series, there are the sequel series set five years later, starting with 'Generation One'. The tone shifts quite a bit, focusing on a new generation of human Garde. The spin-off 'Legacies Reborn' trilogy ('Return to Zero' is the first) follows some original characters trying to navigate that new world. Honestly, 'United as One' felt like a solid ending, and the later books have a different vibe, but they're there if you want more of that universe.
