Ugh, the reading order debate. This one's got more opinions than the royal court has assassins. For anyone just picking up 'Throne of Glass' now, it's not as simple as publication order, mostly because of 'The Assassin's Blade'. I read the prequel after 'Crown of Midnight' and honestly, that's the sweet spot. You get to know Celaena in the main story first, so when you jump back to the novellas, her past hits harder. It makes her actions and attitude in the early books way more understandable.
Trying to start with the prequel can feel like a slog because you don't have the context to care yet. Plus, you'd spoil some reveals in the first couple novels. Some people swear by reading it after 'Heir of Fire', but that feels too late to me—you're already deep in the epic fantasy shift by then. The tandem read of 'Tower of Dawn' and 'Empire of Storms' is the other big thing. I didn't do it, and I regretted it. The pacing is so much better if you weave them together, even if it's a bit of a logistical nightmare with two books.

Honestly, just go with publication order. The author released them that way for a reason, and it builds the world and character revelations with the intended rhythm. 'The Assassin's Blade' first can be confusing; it's a collection of stories that mean more once you're invested. Reading it later feels like a rewarding flashback, not homework.
I see the argument for the tandem read, but it breaks the flow of a traditional series experience. Reading 'Tower of Dawn' after the cliffhanger in 'Empire of Storms' is tough, but that anxious, wanting-to-get-back-to-the-main-plot feeling is part of the design. It makes you sit with a different set of characters and a slower pace, which some find refreshing.

Publication: 'Throne of Glass', 'Crown of Midnight', 'Heir of Fire', 'The Assassin's Blade', 'Queen of Shadows', 'Empire of Storms', 'Tower of Dawn', 'Kingdom of Ash'. That's the safe, standard route. I inserted the prequel after 'Heir of Fire', and it worked fine. The tandem read is optional but recommended if you hate switching continents mid-cliffhanger.

“You shouldn’t be here,” Lucien growled as he pinned my wrist against the stone pillar. His breath was hot, and I could see the storm brewing behind his eyes.
