Interesting thread. I'm mostly an audiobook person, so my ebook PDFs are just supplementary. I never considered needing a whole system for them. I guess if you're deep into fanfic archives or technical manuals, it makes sense. Might poke around some of these tools for my small collection of RPG rulebooks.
OverDrive's desktop app, Libby, is designed for library borrows, but its interface is a fantastic example of a user-friendly digital bookshelf. If only it could manage personal PDFs! It shows how a good design can make a large library feel manageable and inviting.
Watching these polished commercial apps can give you ideas for how you'd like to structure your own library, even if you use different tools to achieve it.
My two cents: 'Best' is subjective. Someone with 50 carefully curated novels has different needs than someone with 5000 research papers. The former might love a beautiful bookshelf UI, the latter needs powerful tagging and full-text search.
List your top three organizational tasks (e.g., 'find all fantasy novels by author', 'resume reading where I left off', 'search for a quote'). The tool that excels at those tasks for you is the best one.

One night of relentless, jaw-dropping group sex turns Ava into the ultimate Gangbang Princess: a confident, insatiable goddess who craves bigger groups, filthier acts, and total surrender.
What begins as a private apartment rendezvous explodes into a lifestyle of nonstop, action-packed encounters—private parties that become underground sex clubs, luxury yachts packed with strangers, international hotel suites, public risks that leave her dripping in public, and a growing harem of devoted “Daddies” who live to stretch, fill, and worship her.
Liam’s shock turns to proud obsession as he watches his princess take on ten, twenty, even thirty men at once.
Packed with pulse-pounding, finger-licking sex scenes that escalate chapter after chapter, raw emotions, jealous twists, and cliffhangers that make readers physically unable to stop scrolling, Gangbang Princess: A Spicy Gangbang Collection delivers 312 chapters of pure, unfiltered addiction.

This book isn’t for the faint of heart because once you enter The Pleasure Archive, there is no turning back.
In a world where desire knows no boundaries, she thought surrendering once would be enough but she was wrong.
Lila Bennett’s forbidden affair with her dangerously seductive literature professor, Elias Voss, was supposed to be a secret.
One late-night encounter on his desk was all it took to set off an obsession neither of them could control.
But when hidden cameras capture their raw, passionate sin and a mysterious blackmailer threatens to destroy them both, Lila is dragged into a dark game of blackmail and lust.
Now she must journey through a web of dangerous desires:
From the strict control of her possessive professor, she is pushed into the merciless empire of a cold billionaire CEO who turns her into his personal office whore, making her drip with his load while she works. Her submission then escalates inside the beastly midnight club where she is publicly used, shared, and trained by the city’s most powerful men.
As the story continues, Lila becomes even wilder.
From innocent student to corporate fucktoy, from secret club slave to willing cumslut, Lila’s descent into pure, filthy pleasure knows no limit.

Batch operations are a lifesaver. Adding 100 new PDFs to a library and needing to tag them all individually is torture. 'Librera' has some batch tagging, and 'Calibre' on desktop is the master of this. On Android, the lack of robust batch editing is a weakness in almost every app. My workflow involves doing heavy organization on my PC with Calibre, then using 'Calibre Companion' to view the polished library on my phone.
The single biggest thing for me was ruthlessly deleting samples after I decided whether to keep the full book. My 'to-read' folder was 80% samples masquerading as books, and it made everything feel cluttered and overwhelming. A clean library starts with only keeping what you're genuinely committed to.
Look at the update history. Does every update just add social features or a new store, or do they actually fix bugs and improve core rendering and management? An app that's been steadily refining its PDF engine for years is a better bet than one chasing trends.
the best method I've found is to use collections based on genres. I create collections like 'Fantasy', 'Sci-Fi', 'Mystery', and 'Romance' and then manually sort each book into its respective category. It takes some time initially, but it makes finding books so much easier later. I also name my collections with emojis for visual appeal, like 🏰 for fantasy or 🔍 for mystery. Another trick is to use the 'Recently Added' collection to keep track of new purchases. For series, I create separate collections with the series name and number the books in order. This keeps everything tidy and accessible.
It's wild how many of these apps have terrible discovery within your own library. You organize things into folders, and then you can only browse by that single hierarchy. What if you want to see all 'space opera' or 'completed series'? That's where apps with tagging and smart playlists shine.
Look for an app that lets you assign multiple tags to a book. Then you can have a smart collection that shows everything tagged 'Sci-Fi' AND 'To-Read'. That multi-dimensional organization is what turns a big pile of books into a usable library. From my testing, Marvin 3 and MapleRead are strongest here. Simple folder-based apps just can't compete once you get past a few hundred titles.
If you have a ton of academic PDFs, Zotero might be the answer. It's a reference manager first, but its PDF handling and library organization are top-notch for structured, searchable collections. You can tag, sort into collections (shelves), and have full-text search. The built-in viewer is decent, and it's designed for massive libraries of documents.
