Sick of seeing irrelevant book recs and promotions for things I won't buy cluttering my Kindle Paperwhite's lockscreen and home screen.

One other feature of the Kindle that I had to turn off was the “Recommended Content” that appears on the Home screen after you have finished reading a book. To turn this off go to Settings > Device Options > Advanced Options > Home & Library. This feature is supposed to recommend new books to readers but I have found that it only serves to distract me from reading the current book. Reading one book at a time is very immersive. For example, I just finished reading the mystery “Naked Pages.” The book follows the investigations of a bookbinder who discovers hidden messages in blank manuscripts. The atmosphere of the book was very quiet and obsessive and it totally drew me in and prevented me from even thinking about looking for another book to read.

I am also trying to keep my Kindle very clean and free from clutter. To accomplish this, I changed my settings to ‘Home & Library’ and then switched the layout to ‘List’. This removes the unpleasant ‘Recommendations’-carousel from the home screen. Of course, Kindle devices with ads also display ads on the lock screen. But you can remove ‘Special Offers’ for a fee in ‘Device Info’ under ‘Settings’. For additional peace I switched off the syncing with Goodreads in ‘Social Networks’ under ‘Settings’. Fewer distractions mean more reading time.

Ugh, the recommendations are just as annoying to me. To turn off the recommendations on your Kindle, go to Settings > Device Options > Home & Library and change the Home Screen View to List. For older Kindles you may also need to disable Special Offers in Device Info > Device. To do this you pay a one-off fee of about $20 but you will never see any ads again. Turning off Wi-Fi when it’s not needed also stops new recommendations appearing on your home page, which is not an ideal solution but does work to some extent.

Turn off Kindle book recommendations quickly. Go to Settings, then Device Options, then Home & Library. Change your Home page view from Recommended to List view. Note that removing Special Offers will not remove all book recommendations, but it is a big improvement. For example, I organized my library into collections, which makes my Home page look very organized.

My Kindle is used in bed so to solve for the problem above I've set up a gooseneck for a tablet holder on my headboard. The Kindle sits right in front of my face and I use a small Bluetooth remote to turn pages. My hands are tucked under the blankets and never touch the screen. It's a bit of a goof but really is the most comfortable way to read. Sensitivity is never an issue since I never touch the screen.

For the term 'page turner' I think many people get confused between the animation type (in 'Settings' > 'Reading Options' on the Kindle, select 'Instant' or 'Page Turn’ for animation types), the reading gesture (in the Kindle app ‘Aa’ > ‘Page Turn’ > ‘Swipe or Tap’), and the hardware page turner (which is all Bluetooth-connected remotes on your smart devices). Unfortunately, there is no single menu in the Kindle to set up all of these – so to remember: device settings for the above-mentioned animations, app settings for the reading gestures, and your phone/tablet’s Bluetooth settings for the hardware remotes. Wish Amazon would unify these though. Write this down if you have to remember!

Most importantly, think about why you want to hide your books. Are you trying to prevent extreme choice paralysis? Then use the Downloaded filter. Are you trying to hide specific genres or even certain individual books (such as a borrowed Kindle book that you don’t want the current owner to see?) Then archive them. Are you trying to make a clean list of books you need to read? Then use collections. Most of this can be solved with a hybrid approach. My device is set to the ‘Downloaded’ filter, I archive all the gadgets and freebies that I receive which I don’t like, and I have a ‘Next Up’ collection for the books that I am currently most interested in reading. This approach keeps my digital reading life under control.

I’m a tactile reader. I like apps to mimic the physical ergonomics of books. Google Play Books is surprisingly good at pinch-to-zoom, no blur at maximum zoom, and does cloud-synching of your libraries for you, which is great for me.
Comic Screen is very good for reading manga and illustrated books. This application allows to isolate the panels and to zoom in very dynamically, it is frequently name-dropped by the producers of graphic novels in perk descriptions of their Kickstarter projects. Recently I also discovered ReadEra application, it has a split-screen mode to reference footnotes while keeping the main text enlarged. Bonus points for having no ads.
The apps listed are not tools to read, they enhance your reading experience greatly. It’s cool that some indie comic artists list ‘Comic Screen’ in their Kickstarter perks for graphic novels.

Random tech glitches are the worst. Recently my home button froze while I was trying to get ready for a trip and I was freaking out. The problem was that my screen protector was on just a tad too thick and was interfering with the button’s ability to register presses. I took off the screen protector and that solved the problem. If you just put a new case or screen protector on your Kindle and it’s not behaving as it should, try removing it to see if that solves the problem. If not, a forced restart (hold the power button for 40 seconds) is the typical fix for these types of glitches. Kindles are tough and can withstand a lot, but every now and then they just need a little tender loving care.
