I re-read 'Drunk Wizard' recently and kept noticing how weirdly specific the rules are. It’s not just 'wands and spells'—the magic system feels like a hangover remedy gone sentient. The protagonist’s inebriated state literally warps reality around him, so the laws of magic get softer and more unpredictable the fuzzier his head gets. It creates this unstable, almost dangerous playground where you’re never quite sure if a failed spell is because he messed up the incantation or because he was seeing double. The book builds the world through these consequences; a botched spell in Chapter 3 might cause a localized rain of pickled onions that becomes a running gag, but also a political boundary dispute three chapters later.
What I love is that the 'sober' magical society is portrayed as rigid and bureaucratic, so the Drunk Wizard’s chaotic magic acts as a critique of that. The worldbuilding happens in the clash between the two. You learn about the official Ministry of Thaumaturgy through their exasperated reports about his 'unauthorized reality events.' It’s clever because you get the pristine textbook version and the messy, lived-in version simultaneously.
The development is organic and messy, which fits the theme perfectly. Magic isn't a clean science; it's sticky, smells of old beer, and follows dream logic. The world gets fleshed out through barroom conversations, bad decisions, and the aftermath of magical accidents. You learn about the world because the main character keeps breaking its windows and then has to figure out how much the glass costs. It's less about grand exposition and more about the residue of magic on everyday life.
Honestly, the magical world in that book felt a bit shallow to me. It’s a fun premise, a wizard who powers his magic by drinking, but after the initial novelty wears off, it doesn’t feel like it goes anywhere new. The world seems to exist mostly as a backdrop for the protagonist’s antics. We hear about different magical ingredients and taverns, but they don’t have much history or culture attached to them beyond being places he can get a drink.
I kept wanting more about the other magical traditions or how non-drinkers practice magic, but it stays focused on the one gimmick. The development is more about escalating the drunken spell effects for comedy than about exploring a coherent magical ecosystem. It’s a diverting read, but don’t go in expecting the layered lore of something like 'The Name of the Wind.'

Then, when the gem got stolen, this light went out of every necklace, and the dragons lost these magical abilities that the gem had given them.
But before this could happen, after fulfilling these desires, the dragons used them against the humans, enslaving them, but when the gem got stolen, it was all over.
Dragons are still looking for it, and humans wish never to be found so that they do not go through the same thing again.
