Honestly, a lot of DxD fics kinda phone in the combat, rehashing canon battles. For something truly different, look for fics that shift the genre. There’s one that transplants the cast into a 'Fate/stay night' style Holy Grail War framework. Suddenly, every character is a 'Servant' with reimagined Noble Phantasms based on their abilities. The battles become layered with rules, masters, and historical/mythological weight. It forces the author to be inventive with how, say, a Balance Breaker functions as a Noble Phantasm activation. That structural twist makes every fight novel.
Most recommendations go straight to the massive crossovers, which are fine, but I find some of the smaller-scale, character-focused stories handle unique battles better. There's a quiet favorite of mine called 'The Unworthy King' that centers on Sairaorg. His whole thing is raw, Touki-based combat without a fancy sacred gear, and the fic explores that beautifully. The battles are less about flashy beams and more about martial artistry, physics, and sheer force of will clashing against magical defenses.
It turns fights into these gritty, tactical slogs that feel incredibly visceral. You can almost feel the impact of each blow. That approach feels far more unique within the fandom than just adding another overpowered OC or crossover element.
A lot of the time, when I see fics try to get creative with battles, they just pile on more explosions from Issei. The ones that stand out to me are the ones that treat the setting like a puzzle box. There's this ongoing story, 'A Demon Among Devils,' that's stuck with me. It's a crossover with 'High School DxD' and 'Shakugan no Shana,' and the power systems collide in really clever ways. It's not just about raw power; it’s about the mechanics of existence and conceptual flame battling it out with sacred gears.
You get fights where the real tension is in how the rules of one world interact with another. That sort of conceptual warfare is way more interesting to me than another 'Boosted Gear smash' scene. The author clearly thinks about the underlying mechanics, which makes every confrontation feel like a fresh strategic puzzle.

In my previous life, I saved a fallen dragon prince on the day my sister and I were to choose our mates.
In gratitude, he took me back to his clan and made me his concubine.
A year later, I birthed a golden egg, producing a dragon heir.
Overjoyed, the prince crowned me Dragon Queen on his Ascension Day, revered by all clans. Meanwhile, my sister wed a burly beastman, only to become his least favored concubine.
Consumed with jealousy, she pushed me off a cliff during a ritual, ending my life.
When I opened my eyes again, I saw my sister rushing toward the prince's hiding place, her intentions clear from our past life.
I realized she had been reborn, too. But she didn't know that while saving the prince was simple, bearing his heir was a trial beyond measure.

Anyone else kinda live for those 'what if' spins? The sheer volume of alternate universe stuff for 'High School DxD' is wild, and it's honestly where a lot of the most interesting stories happen. You've got the obvious high school swaps—Issei attending Kuoh as just a normal human, or maybe a teacher, while the supernatural stuff simmers in the background. Those can be fun slow-burns, but the real meat for me is when the entire power structure gets flipped.
Like, I stumbled across one a while back where the Great War ended differently and the Three Factions never formed the Alliance. Issei got caught up as a pawn in a cold war between Heaven and the Underworld, and the whole dynamic with Rias and the others was fraught with way more tension and political maneuvering. It wasn't about rating games; it was about survival and espionage. That kind of wholesale change to the world's rules completely alters every character's motivations and relationships, which feels fresh after you've read a hundred fics following the canon stations.
Then you have the really out-there crossovers that essentially function as AUs. Issei reborn into the world of 'Fate/stay night' as a Master or even a Servant? That's a full-blown alternate universe with its own logic. The author has to rebuild his place in that world from the ground up, which often leads to some clever power interactions and new rivalries. Those stories are a mixed bag for sure—some feel forced, but the good ones make you wish for an official spin-off.
Honestly, the more removed from the original setting, the more I tend to enjoy it. Modern no-magic AUs, historical fantasy AUs, even straight-up genre shifts into mystery or sci-fi. They force the characters to be defined by their core personalities rather than their canonical roles and powers, which can lead to some surprisingly sharp character studies. My bookmark folder is mostly that stuff now.
If you’re diving into the chaotic, horny, and oddly heartfelt world of 'High School DxD' fanfiction, there’s a real spectrum that fans point to as the best — and it usually comes down to what you want from the story. For late-night meandering reads I loved tales that leaned hard into the comedy and harem dynamics, the kind that capture Issei’s idiot charm while giving the girls solid characterization. Community favorites in that camp tend to be fast-paced, bingeable fics with lots of banter and callbacks to the canon, examples people keep recommending are 'A Devil’s Oath' and 'Rias and the Reluctant King'. They’re not perfect, but they nail the voices and deliver the fanservice with a wink.
On the other end, when I want something more substantial, fans often point to darker, plot-heavy rewrites or ALT-universe epics that rework the politics of the Underworld and give the cast real stakes. Stories like 'The Red Dragon’s Heir' (a title that pops up a lot) get praise for thoughtful pacing, emotional beats, and for expanding the world without betraying core personalities. Those fics usually have long arcs, consistent power-scaling, and authors who respect continuity.
If you’re just starting, check rating counts, reviews, and whether the author updates regularly. I’ll usually skim the first few chapters, then jump to later key scenes to see if tone and plotting hold up. Fan forums, curated lists on FanFiction.net and AO3, and pinned Reddit threads are gold mines. Happy hunting — and don’t be afraid to drop a kudos for the ones that make you laugh or cry.
