As opposed to, say, a sword fight, watching Elara’s facts hold up solidly to win the day is actually quite thrilling. It’s the triumph of intellect and determination, which is Elara.

The loud, passionate and unending song of Orpheus will live on. In the end that’s what I find really sophisticated about this story: it’s not just about good winning against evil or vice versa. It’s just that the world as it is today is better than the world that could have been.

I just can’t stop thinking about the last line of dialogue before they say goodbye. “I’ll carry this with me” is so much better than “I love you too”, “Stay with me”, or “Come with me”. By leaving Brando’s base, they are returning to nature even in its worst state of collapse. The continued journey of the boy and the dog is that of rewilding. The movie is expressing the hope that there will be life after the collapse, and it will not be a return to old ways of ecological domination and control but rather an adaptation to the new and an embracing of the natural, symbiotic and adaptive relationships that will emerge from the collapse.

This is a powerful modern twist at the end of a historical romance. The female lead ends up alone but it is a triumphant situation for her. The female lead chose her own destiny over ‘timeless love’ for her career and for her freedom. The male lead was respects her choice and departed. The last image of her is smiling and at the helm of her own ship looking out to the horizon. A modern conclusion written in a historical romance setting. This is my favorite kind of twist.

This would make for an amazing ending to a story, as well as an amazing soundtrack. I imagine a super mellow, acoustic, sad song, kept bare with minimal production. A simple voice and guitar would suffice. The song would fade out to nothing, no big, sweeping notes or ending music. The song would just sort of….end. It’s so emotional, and I imagine it to be a totally specific tone: not sad/angry, just tired/sad. Exhausted.

I have re-read the last chapter of 'Redeeming Love' far too many times! There is a particular line that I come back to again and again. Be warned, however: if you were expecting some sort of fluff, you will be disappointed. But if you are able to appreciate a good subversion, the ending is brilliant.
