Aren't most fantasy romances technically this? I feel like the label is applied too loosely. For me, true 'enemies' means there's a legitimate reason for them to harm each other at the start, and magic is that reason. Not just snarky banter between rival magic students.

I'm blanking on the title, but there was this indie book about two scribes from magically opposing kingdoms tasked with writing a joint history. Their magical conflict was all about historical narrative, magical linguistics, and the power of written words to shape reality. The enmity was academic and deeply magical. Wish I could remember the name!

What about novels where they're competing for the same magical resource or title? 'All of Us Villains' is basically a magical Hunger Games with morally gray characters. The enemies-to-lovers tension is amplified because only one can survive to wield the ultimate magic. It's brutal and fantastic.

Honestly, half my Goodreads 'to-read' shelf is from threads like this. My wallet and my free time are weeping, but my inner fantasy-romance addict is thrilled.

I appreciate when the magical conflict reflects real-world tensions. 'Iron Widow' isn't traditional fantasy, but the mecha-piloting magic system is the battleground for a furious feminist revenge story. The 'lovers' dynamic is a polyamorous triad built on a foundation of shared rage against a magical-patriarchal system. The enemy is the system itself.

Daniel Knight lives for two things — running his empire and watching Sexy Red burn up the stage. The mysterious, red-haired dancer with a body made for sin is all he wants… and all he can’t have.
The last thing he expects? His mother shoving him into an arranged marriage with Kelly Thompson… the plain, boring, mole-faced “ugly duckling” he insulted without a second thought.
He hates her. She hates him more.
“Marry you? Not in this lifetime,” he sneers.
“Right back at you,” she fires back.
But when the wedding ring is on, Danny still can’t get Sexy Red out of his head... until one night, he rips off her disguise and realizes the woman he’s been craving is the wife he swore to make miserable.
Now, every touch feels like a lie.
Every kiss, a dare.
And the man who swore to ruin her… can’t stop trying to claim her.

This book is a spin-off from A Whole New World but can be read as a standalone.
*If you’re already following this story under A Whole New World, you don't need to read it here again.
Rejected by her Alpha mate, Lyra is claimed by his ruthless rival, awakening dangerous powers. Torn between past and present, love and revenge, she must choose her destiny as war, passion, and secrets collide.
Brielle Hartley swore she’d never return to Willow Creek, the small town packed with too many memories and one infuriating man she hoped to forget. But when her mother needs help, Brielle is forced back home—only to discover that the first person she runs into is the last man she ever wanted to see: Jaxon Reed, the boy who spent their senior year getting under her skin…and apparently still has the talent.
Now older, broader, and annoyingly irresistible,Jaxon has become a respected volunteer in the community. But he hasn’t changed his habit of poking at Brielle’s nerves. Their reunion strikes immediate sparks some angry, some dangerously magnetic.
What begins as avoidance turns into constant collisions: at the farmers market, around town, and eventually at the community garden project they’re roped into running together. With every stubborn argument and every unexpected moment of softness, the walls between them weaken. Tension turns into chemistry, chemistry into longing, and longing into something neither of them wants to admit.
As Brielle fights the pull she feels toward the man she once despised, Jaxon battles with the guilt of the past and the fear that he’s already blown his second chance. What they don’t realize is that the very history that pushed them apart may be the key to bringing them together.
Enemies? Absolutely.
Attraction? Undeniable.
Love? Inevitable…if they’re brave enough to take it.

I knew I was going to die in that alley.
There was blood everywhere, rogues closing in, and then he showed up my sworn enemy, Dante Veyron.
We’ve hated each other since college. Every fight ended in blood or broken bones. But that night, he saved me. And after being trapped together in an abandoned warehouse for two nights, everything changed.
Now our packs are forcing us to lead side by side against a rising rogue threat. To the world, we are allies. In truth, I can’t decide if I want to tear Dante’s throat out… or taste his lips again.
But in a city where betrayal hides in every shadow, loving your enemy could destroy us both.

Part 3 has some gems for enemies-to-lovers fans. The dynamic between Yennefer and Geralt in 'The Last Wish' spinoffs is electric—their magical clashes are just a backdrop for the real tension, which is all about trust and vulnerability. One standout is 'Embers of Destiny,' where Yennefer’s curse forces Geralt to confront his own emotions. The magic isn’t just spells; it’s a metaphor for their emotional barriers.
Another favorite is 'Thorns of the Rose,' where a rival witch hunter ends up bound to his target by a spell gone wrong. The forced proximity trope here is chef’s kiss, with magic amplifying their grudging attraction. The conflicts aren’t just physical—they’re about ideologies, with magic as the battleground. If you love slow burns where every spell cast feels like a love letter or a betrayal, these stories nail it.
I’m absolutely obsessed with enemies-to-lovers romances—they’re my guilty pleasure! One of my all-time favorites is 'The Cruel Prince' by Holly Black. The tension between Jude and Cardan is electrifying, and their dynamic evolves from outright hostility to something far more complicated and enthralling. Another standout is 'Serpent & Dove' by Shelby Mahurin, where a witch and a witch hunter are forced into a marriage of convenience, and their fiery exchanges slowly melt into genuine affection. 'Red Queen' by Victoria Aveyard also delivers this trope masterfully, with Mare and Cal’s relationship shifting from distrust to deep connection amidst a backdrop of rebellion and betrayal. These books nail the slow burn, making every glance and argument charged with unspoken emotions. If you love slow-burn tension and complex relationships, these are must-reads.
I absolutely adore enemies-to-lovers tropes in fantasy romance, especially in young adult books. One of my all-time favorites is 'The Cruel Prince' by Holly Black. The dynamic between Jude and Cardan is electrifying—full of tension, betrayal, and unexpected chemistry. Another great pick is 'From Blood and Ash' by Jennifer L. Armentrout, where the protagonist's fiery relationship with Hawke keeps you on edge. 'Serpent & Dove' by Shelby Mahurin is another gem, blending witchcraft and forbidden love in a way that’s both dark and delicious. These books all have that perfect mix of rivalry and romance, making them impossible to put down.
