That said, "possessing" Gear Fifth isn't as simple as flipping a permanent switch. In practice it's a temporary, high-output state that burns stamina and relies on Luffy's will and Haki integration. Based on other awakenings we've seen — like fabrics of reality-changing with Doflamingo's strings — an awakened form gives new laws to the user but also new costs. I personally think Luffy can refine this: extend duration, limit collateral effects, and weave it smarter with advanced Haki. And knowing how Oda loves escalation, this could be the foundation for future 'gears' or deeper control rather than a finite endpoint. For now, Gear Fifth is essentially his awakened fruit showing itself — brilliant, chaotic, and very much a part of who Luffy is now.

Avid 'One Piece' junkie here! So, Luffy first unveils his Haki in the Marineford arc. Specifically, it happens in Chapter 570 when he knocks out a pack of wolves without touching them. However, it's only after his training with Rayleigh that he really gets a handle on it, which is post-timeskip.
