The economic pressure to write to market doesn't help. When a certain type of dark, possessive romance sells millions of copies, publishers want more of it. Authors see that and might water down or omit consent themes to fit the 'formula' they think readers want. It creates a cycle.
Breaking that cycle requires readers to loudly support and buy the books that do it right. Leaving reviews that specifically praise the healthy dynamics, recommending them online, and discussing why they work. We vote with our wallets. If ethical romance sells, the market will shift to provide more of it.
I wish more books included aftermath and processing. A character has their mind read, or is magically compelled, or is kissed without clear agreement. The plot often moves on quickly. But where's the emotional fallout? The violation, the anger, the rebuilding of trust? Showing that process is showing why consent matters. It has consequences.
When a book slows down to show a character grappling with the feeling of being used or manipulated, even by someone they care about, it teaches readers to honor their own feelings of discomfort. It says, 'Your boundaries matter, and having them crossed should hurt, even in a fantasy story.' That's a powerful, necessary lesson.

“where Forbidden desires have no limits—priests fall, stepbrothers claim, women claimed and professors own. Thirty-five filthy and erotic stories. Zero mercy.”
Twenty-six, brilliant, and achingly untouched, PhD student Cassie walks into the city’s most exclusive sex club because of a bet against her virginity. She chooses him blindly: a cruel Dom who drags her to the hidden chambers, spreads her trembling thighs, and takes her virginity with slow, savage thrusts while she screams. She never sees his face.
She buries the memory under ambition, until her mother’s death forces her back to her home.
Her brother offers her an internship with his best friend, Reginald Walker; an introverted, lethal and impossibly controlled CEO. The man whose mere presence makes her wet and reckless. Cassie pushes until Reggie snaps, chains her on the wooden crucifix, spreads her legs and fucks her till she's speaking in tongues.
Despite the fact that Reggie cannot do emotions, their secret affair turns raw and desperate: His hand is always fisted in her hair, his neck filled with hickeys that his shirt cannot hide. Their love and lust is so violent it terrifies them both.
Then the devil returns. Dominic is the one who broke Cassie's virginity and he recognises her one night at a party. He does everything to get a taste of her again, including blackmail.
When Reggie refuses to believe that the pictures he received are from the past, he walks out but they get back. Before they can fully reconcile, Reggie's ex comes with full force. Cassie runs to her brother with a broken heart. Reggie drowns in whiskey and self-loathing. On his knees in the rain,he begs for her forgiveness and love.
She gives it, but nothing is the same again. They start over slowly, trying to rebuild what Dominic nearly destroyed.
One careful kiss, one trembling “I love you,” one fragile heartbeat at a time.

His hand wrapped around my throat in claim, as he pinned me against the cold stone wall.
“You’re mine,” he growled, his breath hot against my lips. “Every breath and every heartbeat you take. Mine.”
But his nephew’s voice echoed in my mind: “You deserve better than a man who treats you like furniture.”
I never wanted this bond.
Alpha Zane forced me into a contract marriage—bear him an heir, then disappear. He made it clear I’m nothing more than a child-bearing vessel. A servant elevated to Luna only because the Moon Goddess cursed us both.
But his nephew, Kaius, sees me differently. He’s kind where Zane is cruel. Gentle where Zane is possessive. He offers me everything my mate hides from me: respect, partnership, freedom.
The problem? My body responds to Zane’s dominance even as my heart breaks from his coldness. And the more Kaius shows me what love could look like, the more dangerous this becomes.
Because Zane may not love me—but he’ll destroy anyone who tries to take what’s his.
Even his own family.
Torn between the mate who owns my soul and the man who sees it—which desire will damn me first?

The comparison to historical romance is apt. In those, the power imbalance is social and financial. In fantasy, it's magical and physical. But the core narrative problem is the same: how do you build an equal partnership within an unequal structure? The solutions are similar, too—the powerful partner must relinquish some control, must empower the other, must listen and adapt.
Maybe that's why I like both genres. They're both about finding autonomy and voice within a system designed to suppress it. The consent is hard-won, and that makes it meaningful.
I appreciate when contemporary romance uses humor to navigate power and consent. It doesn't all have to be super serious negotiation scenes. A funny, awkward conversation about boundaries can feel more real and relatable than a perfectly scripted one. It shows the characters are human, maybe a bit clumsy, but their hearts are in the right place.
Laughter can be a great equalizer in a power-imbalanced situation. Sharing a joke about the awkwardness of their dynamic can momentarily dissolve the hierarchy and connect them as two people figuring it out. That moment of shared humanity often feels like the truest form of consent—agreeing to be vulnerable and silly together.
