If you enjoy quiet, literary slices of life, 'Olive Kitteridge' by Elizabeth Strout is a beautiful collection of linked stories all orbiting around one complex, difficult woman in a small town. You see Olive as a teacher, a wife, a mother, a neighbor from dozens of angles. There's no overarching plot, just a profound accumulation of character. It teaches you that a character can be the setting, the theme, and the plot all at once. Her presence ties everything together, proving that depth of character can be the only connective tissue a narrative needs.
You know, I never really thought about it, but a lot of my favorite video games are super character-driven too. Makes sense the same principles apply to novels.
Honestly, I tried 'A Little Life' based on a rec like this and it destroyed me for a week. So... maybe beginner-friendly in technique, but emotionally advanced? Proceed with caution, haha.
Graphic novels are stellar for this too. 'Blankets' by Craig Thompson is an autobiographical masterpiece about first love, faith, and family. The 'plot' is a series of memories from his childhood and adolescence. The emotional impact comes from the detailed, tender art conveying introspection, doubt, and longing. You feel his internal conflicts about religion and desire viscerally. It proves that character-driven storytelling isn't confined to prose; visual narratives can achieve profound intimacy through focus on a character's subjective experience.

You think I care about titles?” he asked, stepping even closer until I could feel the heat radiating from him. “Do you think that matters to me?”
“It should,” I said, my voice breaking slightly. “It matters to me.”
He tilted his head slightly, studying me. "Why? Why does it matter so much to you?"
“Because,” I said quickly, searching for the right words. “Because people like me... we don’t belong with people like you. You’re... you’re powerful, and I’m—”
“Beautiful,” he cut me off, his voice firm.
I froze, my words dying on my lips. “What?” I whispered.
