Where Can I Find Archived New York Times Must Read Books Lists?

Love exploring NYT's literary highlights each year, but the main site cycles them fast. Are archived reading lists from previous seasons accessible anywhere?

Check out archive.today (also known as archive.ph). It's another web archiving service that sometimes has snapshots the Wayback Machine misses. People use it to save news articles they think might get altered or deleted. Search for the NYT list URL there. Between that and archive.org, you cover a lot of ground.

YouTube is an odd but sometimes useful place. Booktubers doing 'reading the NYT notable books of 2012' challenges will often have the full list in their video description or in a pinned comment. It’s a very contemporary, social way to encounter an old list. You get the list plus someone’s ongoing reaction to it, which can be entertaining and informative.

Librarians are literal information-finding wizards. If you’re struggling, email or chat with the reference desk at a major public library like NYPL or Boston Public. They have access to tools and knowledge about accessing historical periodicals that most of us don’t. They can often guide you to the exact database or microfilm reel you need. It’s an old-school solution, but it’s incredibly effective and their help is usually free.

Meh. I find year-end lists exhausting. There's so much pressure to absorb all that 'important' writing. I'd rather just wander through a bookstore or library and pick up whatever calls to me. Archiving these lists feels like institutionalizing anxiety about missing out. But hey, to each their own. Happy hunting, I guess.

Maybe the goal shouldn't be to find the archived list, but to reconstruct it. Look up 'best books of [year]' roundups from other major outlets like the Guardian, NPR, or the WSJ. Cross-reference them. The books that appear on multiple lists are probably the true 'must-reads' of that year, filtered through a wider lens than just the NYT.

Where can I find archived New York Times Best Seller book lists?

The public library in a major city is your best free physical resource. Their periodicals room will have bound volumes of the New York Times on shelves. You go in, pull the volume for the year you want, and flip to the Book Review section. It's simple, reliable, and doesn't require a login.

How does the New York Times choose its must read books list?

Wait, are we talking about the weekly 'Editors' Choice' list or the more frequent 'New & Notable'? The process might differ slightly. The 'Editors' Choice' is the big one, the curated ten or so. That's the one with the most deliberation. The others might be more reactive, tracking what's getting strong reviews or immediate buzz. The weekly 'must read' is the flagship, and I think for that, they're aiming for a mix that represents their editorial vision for that particular week in literature. It's a statement piece.
