My local library's online system connected to something called 'Biblioboard' which had a whole collection of classic pulp and weird fiction, including several Blackwood titles. It was free with my library card. These services are often overlooked. It's worth logging into your library's website and seeing what digital partners they have. You might find a whole shelf of his work available to read online instantly, no waiting, no cost.

If you're after a physical book, the Dover Publications edition 'The Best Ghost Stories of Algernon Blackwood' is a classic and easy to find. It's not the complete works, but it's a hefty collection with most of his famous ones like 'The Willows' and 'The Wendigo'. Dover books are usually affordable and well-printed. I've seen it on Amazon and in used bookstores pretty regularly. For a more curated, modern take, the Penguin Classics 'Ancient Sorceries and Other Tales' is another excellent compilation with good notes.

For a modern, readable paperback that's easy to carry around, the Wordsworth Editions 'The Best Ghost Stories of Algernon Blackwood' is a good choice. Wordsworth does these 'Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural' series that are very affordable. Again, it's a selection, not complete, but it's a physical book you can get for a few bucks. The print is decent, and it's a no-fuss way to dive into his world. I have their M.R. James and Blackwood volumes on my shelf.

He's not as straightforward as M.R. James, is he? James's ghosts have rules. Blackwood's horrors are vaguer, more philosophical. It's the difference between being haunted by a specific historical tragedy and being haunted by the primordial unknown of the forest itself. Both are brilliant, but scratch different itches. So when you're looking for Blackwood collections, be prepared for something less about plot and more about an overwhelming, sublime sense of dread.

In which order should I read Algernon Blackwood’s major ghost stories?

The collection edited by S.T. Joshi is excellent. The introduction alone is worth the price, and Joshi's ordering is both chronological and thematic. He places the stories in context of Blackwood's life and evolving ideas. If you want an academic, curated experience that enhances understanding, just follow that book from page one to the end.

Which Algernon Blackwood ghost stories are essential to read first?

The man could describe a patch of moss for three pages and make it feel ominous. That's his gift and his hurdle. 'The Willows' is the ultimate expression of that. You have to be in a patient mood. Let the descriptions of the river, the sandbanks, the whispering trees build the mood. The plot is just 'men camp, feel dread, leave.' The event is the atmosphere. Essential? Yes. But maybe not first. Dip a toe with something shorter like 'The Listener' to see if you vibe with his prose style before committing to his magnum opus.
