Web serials are a whole other world. Sites like Royal Road host original, ongoing web novels, many of which are fantastic. Readers support authors through Patreon for early access or bonus chapters. Reading on the site itself is free and legal. Some of these stories are as gripping as any published book and update multiple times a week. It's the 'latest' in a very raw, immediate sense.

If you enjoy romance, many authors have their own websites where they sell ebooks directly, often before wider release. They also use platforms like Prolific Works to give away free starter books to newsletter subscribers. This is a huge part of the romance community culture. You sign up for an author's newsletter, get a free book, and get notified the moment their next book is live for sale. It's all perfectly legal and a great way to stay on top of new releases in that genre.

Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, and other big publishers sometimes have online book clubs or reading groups where they offer free digital copies of upcoming releases in exchange for an honest review. You have to sign up for their newsletters or join sites like NetGalley or BookSirens. NetGalley is for reviewers, bloggers, and librarians to request advance copies. If you're serious about reading the very latest books before publication, building a review profile there is a legitimate avenue.

I'm a bit skeptical of some subscription services. They can feel like you're renting access to a giant catalog that could disappear. For books I truly love and want to revisit, I still prefer to purchase the ebook. That way, it's in my cloud library forever (or as long as the platform exists). For the latest book from a favorite author, that purchase feels like an investment in my permanent collection.

For graphic novels and manga, comiXology (owned by Amazon) and the Shonen Jump/Viz Media apps are the legal go-tos for latest volumes. The Shonen Jump app has a cheap monthly subscription that lets you read thousands of chapters, including the newest ones as they release weekly in Japan. For Western comics, comiXology Unlimited offers a Netflix-style subscription for a huge catalog, including many recent titles from DC, Image, etc. It's the best way to read online legally in this space.

His tongue was still on her when she realized—she’d left the door unlocked.

For a more social approach, Goodreads is surprisingly useful for this. If you follow thriller authors or mark upcoming releases as 'want to read,' the site's recommendations and newsletters will often highlight where those books are available for pre-order or immediate download. The community reviews also give you a sense of whether the latest buzzy book is actually worth your time before you commit to a purchase.
A lot of the big platforms are pretty reliable for this, though honestly the 'latest' can be a moving target depending on the publisher deals. I've had decent luck on the Kobo Plus subscription, where they update their library with new releases from indie and some bigger publishers pretty regularly—caught a new SFF novel there the same week it hit stores. Amazon's Kindle Unlimited is an obvious one, but it's more of a mixed bag; you'll see recent stuff alongside a ton of older titles, so you have to sift a bit.
Some folks sleep on the official publisher sites. Tor.com, for instance, posts free short stories and sometimes serializes new novels to hook readers before the full launch. It's a legal way to read fresh content directly from the source, though it's often just a preview. Honestly, I find the best method is to follow authors you like on socials; they'll usually shout out where their new book is available for online reading, which points you right to the legit spot. My feed's full of those announcements, and it's saved me from wandering onto sketchy aggregator pages more than once.
