Most of those lists are SEO garbage, written to capture search traffic like yours. They just regurgitate the same affiliate-linked books. You'll get better, more nuanced recommendations in niche forums for writers, designers, or even specific hobbies like game design or woodworking. The needs of a poet and a software engineer are different. What kind of creativity are you aiming for? Narrow it down, then ask in a community that shares your specific creative goals.

I'd argue some of the best books for creativity aren't labeled as such. Philosophy books, books on learning theory ('Make It Stick'), or even books on magic and illusion ('Stealing Fire'... though that's more about altered states). Exposing your brain to different models of how the world works creates more connections. Read about biology, architecture, or music theory. Cross-pollination of concepts is the real fuel.

Be careful with the pop-psychology ones that over-promise. Neuroscience is cool, but we don't fully understand creativity. Any book that claims to have 'the' scientific formula is overselling. I prefer books that are humble, that present tools and perspectives rather than guarantees. The ones that admit it's a mysterious, often frustrating process feel more trustworthy to me.

For a more academic take, 'Creativity: The Psychology of Discovery and Invention' by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (the 'flow' guy) is dense but rewarding. It's based on interviews with genuinely creative people across fields, trying to find common patterns in their lives and thinking processes. It's less a guide and more an investigation. You won't finish it with a quick fix, but you'll understand the ecosystem creativity grows in.

I get a lot from reading critical analyses of art I love. Understanding why a painting, film, or novel works on a technical level gives me tools to use, homage, or subvert. So instead of a 'creativity' book, try 'The Anatomy of Story' or 'In the Blink of an Eye' (film editing). Deconstruction is a form of reverse-engineering creativity.

Content Warning ️
Carnal temptations is extremely spicy and intended for mature audiences only. It contains graphic adult content, intense taboo relationships, power play, dubious consent, and morally gray characters. Reader discretion is strongly advised.
In this dripping-wet collection of forbidden steamy tales,a rebellious college brat gets exactly what she deserves in the first tale, bent over her desk, stretched and pounded senseless while he teaches her the real meaning of discipline.
From there, every fantasy turns darker and nastier.
Spoiled royals claim their defiant knights and maids on thrones and palace floors, claiming throats raw under crown and silk.
Best friends cross every line in sweaty, drenched threesomes.
CEOs wreck their secretaries over conference tables, while twisted Doms bind, flog, choke, and claim their willing (and unwilling) subs until they reach climax and scream.
This is not romance.
This is pure, primal, taboo-shattering filth, where power, lust, and obsession collide in the wettest, most depraved ways possible.
Welcome to Carnal temptations…Open it. Spread your legs.
And let yourself be completely ruined.
If you’re a delicate little flower who clutches pearls and believes sex should only happen in the missionary position with the lights off and your spouse’s permission, close this book immediately. Seriously. Put it down before you ruin your boring little life with uncontrollable wetness and questionable morals.
Still here? Good girl.

You’ve been warned.
They say it’s just fiction... but these stories burn too real.
Every page drips with lust, danger, and forbidden desire.
There are no love stories here, only raw need, untamed passion, and the kind of encounters that leave your pulse racing and your body aching for more.
Inside these pages, you’ll find hotel hookups, forbidden age gaps, dominant bosses, naughty students with teachers, moaning nurses, lesbians, stepfathers who cross the line, and desperate daughters who let them and vice versa. From BDSM dungeons to office desks, from late-night threesomes to risky public play... no fantasy is off-limits.
Midnight Pleasures is a no-limits collection of erotic short stories meant to tease, tempt, and utterly satisfy. Quick hits. Slow burns. Rough rides. Dangerous desires. Even the ones you’ve never admitted out loud.

Warning: This collection contains explicit content, graphic language, and mature themes that may not be suitable for all readers. Some stories explore consensual BDSM, power play, taboo scenarios, and emotionally intense relationships. Reader discretion is strongly advised. All characters are fictional, consenting adults.

Modern retellings of classics that shift context. 'The Belle of Belgrave Square' or any of the recent spate of Regency romances with a twist. Seeing how a familiar plot skeleton can be re-clothed with new characters, settings, or themes is a direct lesson in creative adaptation and remix culture. It demystifies the process of 'originality'.
I think the hype oversells it. Reading a bunch of books won't magically fix your career, relationships, or happiness. Sometimes a list just gives you a bunch of stuff you feel obligated to read. The real improvement comes from the one or two books that actually speak to you personally, which you might have found anyway through a friend's recommendation. The list just increases the sample size. So maybe the benefit is probabilistic—more at-bats increase your chance of hitting a life-changing home run. But treating the list as a guaranteed path to a better life sets up unrealistic expectations and can ruin the simple joy of reading for its own sake.
I lean towards older, weirder stuff. Marcus Aurelius is already mentioned, but also Seneca's 'Letters from a Stoic' or Epictetus's 'Enchiridion'. The language takes getting used to, but the ideas are startlingly modern and direct. There's a blunt comfort in advice that's survived for two millennia.
