I’ve been reading so much Vietnamese literature lately. Many of the titles are available on Kindle. Historical fiction and modern romance seem to be the most common. There’s this really powerful war novel, ‘The Sorrow of War’ by Bảo Ninh, translated into English. It’s definitely worth a read for those interested in reading more about the recent history of Vietnam. Another very powerful read is ‘Paradise of the Blind’ by Dương Thu Hương, a look at life after the war.

For lighter reads, there’s ‘Mắt biếc’ or ‘Dreamy Eyes’ by Nguyễn Nhật Ánh, a child-hood remembrances classic of Vietnamese literature, many self-published Vietnamese authors also post their works on the Kindle store, I often read works by new writers there. The best thing about Kindle is that you can bring those books with you wherever you go, and most of the translated books are very well done so you can still feel the essence of the original author.

Kindle is so great for exploring global literature, and I was really excited to find some Vietnamese novels on the platform. ‘The Lotus and the Storm’ by Lan Cao is a wonderful family-centred novel set during the Vietnam War. The other novel that I’ve been really enjoying by a Vietnamese author is ‘The Book of Salt’ by Monique Truong (not Vietnamese, but written from within the Vietnamese diaspora).

Another contemporary book about modern Hanoi is ‘The Beauty of Humanity Movement’ by Camilla Gibb. A young Vietnamese-American woman sees the beautiful side of Hanoi and her trip back to her mother’s home in Hanoi is described in beautiful detail. The Kindle store’s recommended books section is another great way to find books such as these as well as many other lesser-known books. Kindle also has a wide range of accessibility features including variable font sizes as well as book translations.

The native PDF viewer on Kindle has lots of problems with syllabic clusters, does not handle right-to-left scripts properly and does not handle vowel modifiers. She ended up buying Tamil eBooks from Kindle Store as they are formatted for her properly. But for free Tamil PDFs she uses Calibre to convert them to MOBI format and she uses Tamil Unicode fonts which are pre-installed in Calibre. However she has to manually adjust the margins of each book. There are tablets that support reading Tamil books specifically like ‘Lithium’ but then you will be giving up the Kindle’s glare-free reading experience.

Indirect indeed. To access your online reading history go to Amazon.com, log in to your account and go to account settings (top right of the page).
