You’ll miss the in-jokes and callbacks. Cornwell often has Uhtred mention a past event briefly in an early book, then dedicates a whole later book to it. Reading in publication order, you get the tantalizing hint first, then the satisfying deep dive. Reverse that, and the hint in the early book becomes a boring recap of something you already know in exhausting detail.

I borrowed the first one from a coworker and was hooked. I didn’t even know there was a debate. I just read them as I bought them, which happened to be publication order. I tried chronological on my first read because a friend insisted. Big mistake. A later book that functions as a 'prequel' assumes you already know and care about the older Uhtred reflecting on his youth.
