Chapter Sixty Six : Shadows of the Past Stephanie stepped into the office with measured steps, her heels clicking softly against the polished floor. The familiar scent of fresh coffee and printer ink filled the air, but instead of comfort, it brought unease. Everyone seemed to pause at the sight of her, their eyes flitting to her and then away, whispers rising like a tide. She squared her shoulders, pretending not to notice. It was the same office she had worked in for years, yet today, it felt foreign-as if the walls themselves held the weight of what had happened to her.

“Today is Wednesday.” “Maybe they’re ambitious.” “Finally noticed,” Mrs. Finch murmured, but her smile wasn’t smug. It was sad. Like watching someone realize a scar was deeper than it looked. Something soft brushed my arm. I flinched, turned too fast, and a paperback slid itself from the shelf, landed with a whisper at my feet, and opened to the middle as if an invisible thumb had stopped there. Crown hissed, back arched in a black question mark, then settled, eyes huge.

The second Thursday, she stayed for forty-seven minutes. They did not talk about Vanessa. They did not talk about the past. They talked about a book. The Remains of the Day, which she had been rereading because it was the only novel she had brought with her from London. He had read it. He had hated the ending. She had loved the ending. They argued about it for forty minutes, and by the time dessert came, she was laughing once. Not a real laugh. A half one. But it escaped her mouth before she could stop it, and Damien looked at her like a man watching the sunrise after a long night.

“You’re the ex. The one shagging her sister and sending the proof to your girlfriend? That tactic actually works on American whores? Tell me, mate; ever had both at once, or do you prefer to take your time with each one?” I blinked. He leaned in, dropping all pretense. “Which one’s tighter? You know; the better fuck?” I didn’t think. Didn’t breathe. My fist connected with his jaw in a satisfying crunch. He dropped like a sack of bricks. I stood over him, chest heaving. “Disrespect Sophia all you want,” I growled. “But say Sareena’s name again, and I’ll bury you in this hospital. She’s Dr. Morelli. Not Moretti. And she’s mine.”

Scarlett’s POV I felt our connection solidify, forming a bond so deep and unbreakable that I could feel his every emotion, his every heartbeat resonating within me. His body trembled as he pulled his teeth from my skin, licking the wound to seal it, and I was still lost in bliss, my body shuddering from the aftershocks. Guided by instinct, I leaned in, sinking my human teeth into the spot on his neck, claiming him as mine. It took all my strength, but I pushed through, and the moment I broke his skin, a fresh surge of pleasure coursed through us both. Maxwell’s body stilled as he groaned, filling me, his hands gripping me tightly as his release consumed him.

I looked at Alannah, Ternen and then settled on Shelly. All three looked away from my eyes. Alannah and Ternen caught each other look, but it was Alannah that smacked a hand over her mouth and sank to the ground. “No.” I turned to Rick. “Show them.” He stared at me for a minute before turning around and lifting the hair he had let grow over the infected rune carved there. Shelly broke down. Her sobs were soft, but everyone could feel the pain. “That’s why you stopped letting me cut your hair?”
